What Next After Shitisena Shits On Sri Lanka?

10th November 2018 // 0 Comments

By Kumar David – Prof. Kumar David I will not waste my ink reigning curses on the heads of madmen; millions are doing it. I will dwell on the Elections Commissioner’s (EC) dilemma. He seems to have asked the Supreme Court (SC) to rule on constitutionality; if so the following are possible scenarios. 1. The SC refuses to get involved (ducks making a clear-cut ruling). EC should then go ahead and hold elections as instructed. He absolutely should not do anything that can be used by the madman as an excuse for replacing him by some slime-ball sycophant. 2. The SC gives a determination. I can think of three options.  a) It holds that the dissolution is NOT unconstitutional. An incredibly bad judgement but nothing is impossible these days when […]

UNP, JVP to go to Supreme Court

9th November 2018 // 0 Comments

The United National Party (UNP) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) have decided to go to the Supreme Court against dissolving the parliament. They will be filing a petition on 12 November. According to the 19th Constitution, the parliament can be dissolved only after the completion of four and half years of the government’s tenure, or with 2/3 approval of the parliament, or by defeating a budget proposal. Therefore, dissolving the parliament at this moment is illegal, they said. The decision taken by the President to appoint a new Prime Minister on 26 October was also unconstitutional. Even though they were asked to convene the parliament immediately and resolve the issue, reconvening of the parliament was postponed from 5th to 7th and than to 14th November. But […]

9th November 2018 // 0 Comments

Nov 08 (WSWS) Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, installed in a political coup on October 26, has also appropriated the post of finance and economic affairs minister. Last week, in a bid to deflect the opposition of working people, he announced cosmetic measures to ease the economic and social crisis facing workers, peasants and the poor. Rajapakse is trying to paint himself as “people-friendly” in contrast to Ranil Wickremesinghe who was unconstitutionally sacked as prime minister by President Maithripala Sirisena. In fact, whichever faction of the Sri Lankan ruling class finally consolidates power in the ongoing bitter political struggle, it will certainly deliver further blows to the living conditions of working people. On Monday, Mangala Samaraweera, former finance minister, responded to Rajapakse’s announcement by warning that […]
