”PM Modi will finish us off within a year or so” Mahinda

29th May 2014 // 0 Comments

Ranil has 4 buddies in Indian cabinet! “I thought he had asked me to come because of friendship. Now, it seems he is worse than the previous ones. I will have to learn Hindu because he does not know English. If he bullies us that much at the very first meeting, it is sure he will finish us off within a year or so. Not a single Indian should be trusted,” saying thus, president Mahinda Rajapaksa played havoc at Temple Trees yesterday (29) morning upon his return from India, say Temple Trees internal sources. After attending Indian new prime minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in at New Delhi, the president spent the entire morning in a rage without doing any work. During times the president loses his […]

America fears alienation of Tamils

29th May 2014 // 0 Comments

The continuing centralization of development and political activities by the Sri Lankan Government may further alienate ethnic and religious minority communities — including Muslims, Christians, and Hindus — and fuel expanding fears over the governments commitment to equal political rights and civil liberties, the U.S Government has said. The US noted that while it has been five years since the end of Sri Lankas 26 year civil war, circumstances are more challenging than they were a year ago. Although Northern Provincial Council elections were held in September 2013, there has been little movement on reconciliation or accountability by the Government of Sri Lanka, the U.S Government has said in a report to Congress. “Indeed, the positions of many in the majority Sinhalese and the minority Tamil populations […]

Abolishing the executive presidency!

29th May 2014 // 0 Comments

The Left parties of the government have reportedly written to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary, Maithripala Sirisena, requesting that he summon a meeting of the constituent parties of the government to discuss constitutional reforms, including the abolition of the all powerful executive presidency. The letter, which has been copied to President Mahinda Rajapaksa as well, has been sent to the SLFP General Secretary three days ago.  The traditional political Left, which includes LSSP, CP and New Left Front, could well have best intentions. However, given the Left’s dwindling clout within the government, whether the government would heed their call is open to question. In fact, the non-inclusion of LSSP stalwart and Chairman of All Party Representative Committee, Tissa Vitarana in the latest Parliamentary […]

By Usha S Sri-Skanda-Rajah – Jayalalithaa’s Incredible Tenacity – Part 2 The Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, the formidable J Jayalalithaa is on a roll.  In my article,  Jayalalithaa’s Incredible Tenacity part 1, I said Jayalalithaa “is sitting pretty”.  That was before the elections. [1] Now after her “historic and unparalleled win’ at the Lok Sabha elections, capturing 37 seats out of 39, Jayalalithaa, “Tamilnadu’s Lady”, the name she gave herself, has reached a highpoint in her illustrious political career with a high popularity rating to match – she has indeed reached the pinnacle. Yet some might disagree, when she has yet another goal to achieve, that of Prime Minister of India. Why does she need that although we won’t discount it.  Why does she need that, when she is the […]

Sri Lanka: Sifting the earth of the killing fields

29th May 2014 // 0 Comments

By Raghu Menon Sri Lankan government has failed to deliver much peace or justice to the hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans affected by the war.  The government has even refused to accept the weak recommendations of its own Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Committee (LLRC). The government has claimed there hasn’t been a single “civilian casualty” during the war.  It has been five years since the end of one the bloodiest conflicts in recent memory. A state of armed hostility and political instability that embroiled Sri Lanka for decades ended when the Sri Lankan forces claimed victory over the outlawed Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May 2009.The Lankan government declared a peaceful and prosperous future was about to dawn for their people and […]

29th May 2014 // 0 Comments

Papal visit to ‘bless’ genocidal Sri Lanka next year While the new Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosting Rajapaksa to his swearing-in on Monday has enraged Tamils, Pope Francis on the same day has announced to media about his visit to Sri Lanka, the very State of which is accused of genocide, on-going genocide, and has been rejected by Eezham Tamils since 1972. The Papal visit would give recognition to the genocidal State, blunting the calls for genocide investigation, and for that matter any international investigation at all against the State and the Rajapaksa regime, Tamil activists for alternative politics in the island commented. The Pope’s announcement has been received with delight, reported Asian Catholic News Source, UCA News, with a cliché, “Sri Lanka’s ‘great joy’ […]
