Why Muslims May Not Vote Mahinda Rajapaksa

29th October 2014 // 0 Comments

By Hilmy Ahamed – The ONLY reason, the Muslims may not vote for President Rajapaksa, would be the Bodu Bala Sena and other Buddhist extremists who have unleashed so much violence and intimidation against the Muslim community during the last three years, starting with the destruction of a shrine in Anuradhapura to the pogrom of Aluthgama. There are over 350 incidents against the Muslims that have been recorded by the Secretariat for Muslims The Muslims have stood by the country throughout history, and more so during the ethnic war between the Tamil tigers and the government forces by being the buffer for the government forces against the ruthless tigers. For this, they paid a heavy price by being forcible evicted from the North with less […]

EU institutions are studying carefully the LTTE Ruling in detail and will decide on appropriate remedial action to take

29th October 2014 // 0 Comments

United National Party Leadership Council Member Mangala Samaraweera recently stated that the banning of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) by the European Union was a result of diplomacy during his tenure as Foreign Minister and alleged that the lifting of the ban would benefit supporters of the government. He has said that the LTTE had a strong fund raising network in Europe when he became the Foreign Minister in late 2005. This was mainly because the LTTE activities had been curtailed in both the US and the UK following these countries banning the organization as a result of extensive campaigning by former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. However, he points out that it was during his tenure as Foreign Minister that the LTTE was […]

28th October 2014 // 0 Comments

Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) has today stated the Muslim community in Sri Lanka should not hold any reservations in voting in support of the Rajapaksa regime, claiming it is the Muslims who have been benefitted the most since this government was elected into power. “Many have accused the BBS and its activities as the reason behind the loss of votes for the government at the Uva Provincial polls. It is an unfair accusation – what is it that this government has not done for the Muslims?,” BBS General Secretary Galagoda Atte Ganasara had questioned while adding that handing over extremely important portfolios such as the Justice Ministry and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to two Muslims itself has spoken for the current government’s affiliation […]

Who are now running our foreign policy and advising the poor President are worse than idiots.

28th October 2014 // 0 Comments

By Rajiva Wijesinha – In my student days I had a great friend who simplified Wittgenstein into the theory that people simply created their own mythology. That was a satirical idea, used about the more obsessive amongst us, but I fear it is the most suitable image for what is now happening in government. And the saddest aspect of such personal mythologies is that those who create them begin to believe them, and become enthralled by their own vision of the world, even if it has no connection with reality. This phenomenon seems to lie behind some of the confusion that has beset the country in the last few weeks. And it is compounded by what seems the sheer ignorance of government about the information […]

Why The Northern Tamils Are Not Allowed To Exercise The Devolved Powers

28th October 2014 // 0 Comments

I think that if devolution is made to work then the demand for secession will decline as has happened in Scotland. The present government although a law exists for devolution of power is not allowing the NPC to exercise its powers under the law. Politically the demand for devolution of power by the Tamil community has been strong for the last fifty years. Such demand will not just go away. By R.M.B Senanayake – The President says he allowed elections to the Northern Provincial Council. But what he has given with the right hand he has withdrawn with the left hand. The NPC is hamstrung because the power is exercised by the Governor. Provision was made legally for it by the Provincial Councils Act of 1987 which […]

”Don’t Deal With Pro-LTTE TNA, deal with TULF” says Anandasangaree

27th October 2014 // 0 Comments

Veerasingham Anandasangaree , Secretary General of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), has written to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to say that they should talk to the TULF rather than the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), because the latter is nothing but a vestige of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). He has pointed out that since the LTTE’s military decimation in May 2009, the TNA has been acting at the behest of the dominant pro-LTTE section of the Tamil Diaspora. In a letter dated October 18, 2014, Anandasangaree has told President Rajapaksa: “Your offer to abolish the Executive Presidency, if the TNA and the Tamil Diaspora are ready to stop working for separation and the establishment of […]
