The Court annuls, on procedural grounds, the Council measures maintaining the LTTE on the European list of terrorist organisations

http://curia.europa.eu/jcms/upload/docs/application/pdf/2014-10/cp140138en.pdf The Court annuls, on procedural grounds, the Council measures maintaining the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on the European list of terrorist organisations. However, the effects of the annulled measures are maintained temporarily in order to ensure the effectiveness of any possible future freezing of funds. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are a movement which opposed the Government of Sri-Lanka in a violent confrontation which resulted in the LTTE’s defeat in 2009. In 2006, the Council placed the LTTE on the EU list relating to frozen funds of terrorist organisations and has maintained them on that list ever since, referring to, inter alia, decisions of Indian authorities. The LTTE contest their maintenance on the list. They submit that their confrontation with the […]

In a landmark victory for the legal initiatives of Eezham Tamils, the Court of Justice of the European Union has ordered the Council of European Union on Thursday to annul the restrictive measures taken against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The case has been won by the LTTE on procedural grounds, said the lawyers representing the LTTE. Commenting on the judgement, Mr Lathan Suntharalingam, one of the initiators of the legal move against EU ban on LTTE said: “More than 40 countries in the world directly and indirectly abetted the Sri Lankan State in its genocidal onslaught on Eezham Tamils. The US paradigm of ‘War Against Terror’ was used to crush the LTTE-defended State of Eezham Tamils. The ECJ verdict on Thursday is […]

16th October 2014 // 0 Comments

During his speech at the event he had gone […]

Tiger Diaspora leaders to India

16th October 2014 // 0 Comments

Chinese submarines in Colombo, and the Tamil Diaspora entry to India were the surprising developments in India and Sri Lanka last week. The Indian Defence Secretary was in Sri Lanka last week to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was in Kandy. Though it was not clear as to what was conveyed to Mahinda by the Indian Defence Secretary, there was no doubt that India expressed concern over the berthing of three Chinese submarines during the visit of the Chinese President. They were sent to Colombo during the Chinese leaders visit. India suspects that there is provision at the Hambantota Port to berth such submarines. This issue had even surfaced between Mahinda and Modi in New York during the recent United Nations General Assembly sideline talks. […]

A Presidential visit up North and stifling even the limited devolution granted under the 13th amendments.

By all accounts, President Rajapakse’s unprecedented and rather controversial third term re-election campaign, though unofficial, has begun in earnest. Last week he presented the Cabinet of Ministers with a proposal to increase communal harmony in the country and implement the LLRC proposals, though a few weeks earlier the defense establishment, had facilitated a convention of an extremist religious organization, which joined hands with a convicted religious extremist monk from Myanmar to sprout the kind of vitriolic venom at minorities that most closely resembled the worst rhetoric of the Nazi political rallies in Nuremberg, Germany before the second world war. The hate speech charges of over breeding, controlling commerce, diluting the majority through inter marriage, were all charges leveled against the Jews by the Nazi’s. Today […]
