Colombage or Justice Tilakawardane tipped as SL’s new HC in London?

19th October 2014 // 0 Comments

By Sujeeva Nivunhella in London Speculation is rife that former Navy Commander, Admiral (Retd) Jayanath Colombage is tipped to be appointed Sri Lanka’s new High Commissioner to London. The government has opted to nominate a senior naval officer to counter LTTE propaganda in the UK, which is expected to heighten, particularly after an EU court lifted sanctions against the LTTE, knowledgeable sources indicated. As nothing concrete has been done to counter LTTE activities and their propaganda in the UK over the past three years, the Sri Lankan government is keen on picking an energetic military officer to give an impetus to the campaign to counter the pro-LTTE lobby, the sources asserted. With the former envoy to London, Chris Nonis stepping down prematurely and  former intelligence […]

Tamil frustration at not being able to get their constitutional due under 13-A.

By N Sathiya Moorthy The decision of Northern Province Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran to boycott all functions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his politico-administrative turf seems to have been born out of sheer Tamil frustration at not being able to get their constitutional due under 13-A. So should be the Northern Provincial Council decision in not associating with the presidential visit. It’s only half true, though. In the reverse, continual attempts by President Rajapaksa to reach out to the Tamils of the war-torn North should be seen as the Government’s desperation at wanting to do the right thing by the community, to whatever extent possible. In this, the role of the President as the Head of the Sri Lankan State should not be confused […]

“If they want to discuss the TNA is ready at all times” – NP Chief Minister Wigneswaran

19th October 2014 // 0 Comments

Q: What purpose has the Northern Provincial Council been served by boycotting the President’s visit to Jaffna? A: We have not boycotted the President’s visit.  We do not want to be pawns in political events that were probably illegal, very obscure and served no rational or legitimate purpose, we remain committed to work with the Government on genuine projects.  We refused to participate because doing so would violate the mandate issued to us by our people at the election.  We are here as elected representatives to carry out the promises made to our constituents – constituents who had to brave the military and paramilitary outfits intimidating them and a Governor actively campaigning against us.  As intimated by me to the President in my recent  missive […]

TN BJP in a tight spot over fishermen issue

19th October 2014 // 0 Comments

As Tamil Nadu fishermen continue to be arrested and their boats seized by Sri Lanka, BJP is being accused by them of reneging on its promise to protect their interests after assuming power at the Centre. The Tamil Nadu BJP had promised a separate ministry for the welfare of fishermen at the Centre during the run up to theLok Sabha elections. The party had also promised an end to alleged harassment of fishermen at the hands of Sri Lankan Naval personnel in the Palk Staits, something that has going on for over three decades. The BJP state unit for the past several years has been focusing on the travails of fishermen, a sensitive and a politically emotive issue. In a gesture of solidarity, senior BJP […]
