By Rathindra Kuruwita The date of the Presidential election is known by all main astrologers in the country although the Commissioner of Elections is still clueless, Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said. The fact that everyone, apart from all the bureaucrats responsible for holding elections, are talking about the Presidential election to be held in January, is an indication that it is the politicians and astrologers who decide the dates for crucial elections. This is a severe blow to people’s faith in the credibility of elections, CaFFE said.  “The official announcement for the Presidential election will be made after the President’s birthday, on November 18. Analyzing how governments of the past have announced the dates of elections, we see that they were held […]

If we go to divide the country it will create a tense situation,” he said. Earlier, the main opposition United National Party (UNP) told Parliament that the SLMC is attempting to divide the country by calling for […]

Minister of Justice and Leader of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rauff Hakeem said his party would not take ‘positions’ or ‘privileges’ into consideration when making decisions on the presidential election. Addressing a public meeting in Potuvil, Hakeem had said the present government had done nothing for the Muslims of Sri Lanka. “We will only think about the Muslim community of the country when making a decision,” Hakeem said just months ahead of the presidential election. There are many speculations in the media that the leadership of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress is under heavy pressure from its members to step out of the government and remain as a ‘pressure group’ in Parliament. Despite such demands, the SLMC still remains as a stakeholder of the UPFA […]
