Rathana Thera quits posts – Returns his vehicles

Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) MP Ven Athuraliye Rathana Thera has resigned from all positions including the Chairman of the Divulapitiya Development Committee today (17). The Thera has handed over his official vehicle and states that he will act as an independent MP in the government. The Thera added that he is doing this to take the government in the right path stating that the government still has time to adopt the policy changed proposed by his party.

Sri Lanka is currently looking at all aspects of the issue of five Tamil Nadu fishermen who were sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court for drug trafficking, President’s Spokesman Mohan Samaranayake said. “The process is being discussed at the highest levels and the issue is being looked at from all angles. It might take some time as it is not a simple process. A decision will be taken once the process is over,” the spokesman said. Samaranayake has said that one of the options discussed is a staggered process beginning with the commutation of the death sentence to life imprisonment, followed by repatriation to India under the 2010 bilateral agreement on the transfer of sentenced prisoners. UPFA MP Slams Foreign Ministry: Says GL Peiris Should Resign

UPFA Parliamentarian Wasantha Senanayake has said that External Affairs Minister Prof G.L. Peiris is a powerless figurehead and therefore should resign from, his post. The UPFA has also asked authorities not to limit themselves to speaking of foreign forces, but to make a concerted effort to resolve problems in the Foreign Service. Multiple media reports claimed a few weeks ago that Senanayake was to cross over to the opposition. The UPFA Parliamentarian submitted a set of proposals to the President with regard to a constitutional amendment.
