The Last 10 Days before the Vote and the Verdict

28th December 2014 // 0 Comments

by Rajan Philips It was intended to be an astrologically choreographed presidential coronation, but it is turning out to be anything but, even as astrology is finally being put in its place by political uncertainty and a meteorological disaster. The unprecedented Christmas-New Year holiday season election, with an impending Papal visit to follow, is now being literally inundated by the country’s heaviest rainfall and the worst floods since 1957. Although the rains seem to be subsiding after the non-stop Christmas day pour, several districts in the Eastern, North Central, Central and Uva Provinces are still threatened by floods and/or landslides due to overflowing rivers, overrun dams, and unstable land forms. There have been calls for the postponement of the election, and weather conditions during the next […]

28th December 2014 // 0 Comments

Sri Lanka’s largest Muslim political party on Sunday defected from President Mahinda Rajapaksa to support the opposition candidate in the January presidential election. The announcement by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress on Sunday will be a major blow to Rajapaksa’s campaign for a third term in office with more than 20 lawmakers and ministers defecting to the opposition. Ameer Faaiz, a leader of the party that represents minority Muslims in overwhelmingly Buddhist Sri Lanka, cited the Rajapaksa administration’s “intolerance toward religious minorities” and disagreement with his style of rule. He said the party consulted its supporters who were of the overwhelming opinion that they could no longer stand with Rajapaksa and would throw their support behind his rival Maithripala Sirisena. An attack on Muslims in […]

An all-party splitting poll

28th December 2014 // 0 Comments

An all-party splitting poll The Presidential Election of 2015 will certainly go down as one of the most entertaining and unpredictable campaigns in the history of democracy in Sri Lanka. Quite frankly, no-one knows who will do what, next.If a key measure of the vibrancy of Sri Lanka’s democracy is the independence of members of various parties, then we can safely say that our country’s political system is very much alive and kicking. Never in the long history of Sri Lankan politics have so many politicians split from their parties and crossed over to the opposing sides. There was a time when the crossover of one Member of Parliament made waves, and threatened to bring down a government. But today, politicians of all hues are breaking […]

Your Vote is more Powerful than you think: Use it!

28th December 2014 // 0 Comments

Dr. A.C. Visvalingam On account of the unwarranted diffidence of Sri Lankans when it comes to asserting their constitutional rights, the Citizens’ Movement for Good Governance (CIMOGG) has found it necessary to assert repeatedly over the years through the media that the People are sovereign and that no one, however mighty, should be allowed to usurp their powers. Nevertheless, the reality is that, once an election is over, our citizens have got used to watching impotently whilst their elected representatives violate with impunity the trust placed in them to manage honestly and efficiently the affairs of the State. The situation has now reached such depths that, without any fear of punishment by his party’s hierarchy, a Member of Parliament recently proclaimed publicly that he and […]

Kilinochchi Old Woman Scolding Presidential Commission COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – President Mahinda Rajapakse was the last to release an election manifesto, but the delay may have been deliberately designed to get his main rival Maithripala Sirisena’s goat. What ever the stories about Maithripala stealing a march on the manifesto by pinching key elements from the president’s policy document, the latest edition of the “Mahinda Chintana”, or Mahinda’s philosophy, has an unbeatable offer. The president is offering goats to every family in the north and east of the island in a proposal similar to the offer of a cow for each citizen made by a former presidential candidate and Siddhalepa boss Victor Hettigoda in 2005. Unlike Hettigoda’s liberal cow distribution plan, the president’s manifesto restricts the goat […]
