The UPFA has deprived chief SLFP organiser for Batticaloa electorate Arun Tambimuttu of an opportunity to contest at the August 17 parliamentary polls. The district comprises three electorates, namely Batticaloa, Kalkudah and Padirippu. Tambimuttu appeared before the UPFA nominations board headed by coalition’s General Secretary Susil Premjayantha last week. The UPFA has assured Arun that he would be accommodated on its preliminary National List. Thambimuttu functioned as Batticaloa electorate organiser for five years during the then President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s second term. Mahinda challenged to disclose the fraudulent ministers he safeguarded.

State Minster Rosy Senanayake today challenged former president Mahinda Rajapaksa to disclose the names of ministers and deputy ministers he claimed to have safeguarded and to reveal the wrongdoings he claimed to have committed and should do so before submitting nominations on July 13. “Mr. Rajapaksa on three occasions had claimed that he safeguarded ministers and deputy ministers who committed frauds and illegal activities during his tenure as president and admitted that he had compelled the law enforcement agencies to release the wrongdoers. He must reveal these wrongdoings before submitting nominations,”she told a news conference. Upcountry Tamil Progressive Alliance Ties Up With UNP In Lankan Polls and Thonda goes with Mahinda

The Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), a new grouping of political parties of the Indian Origin Tamils (IOTs), is fighting the August 17 Sri Lankan parliamentary elections in alliance with the United National Party (UNP), TPA leader, Mano Ganesan, said in a press release on Friday.  While Ganesan is standing in Colombo District, Palani Thigambaram and V.S.Rathakrishnan is fighting in Nuwara Eliya district. Thigambaram (National Workers’ Front) and Rathakrishnan (Up Country Peoples’ Front) are ministers in the UNP government led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Kettering man loses bid to bring Sri Lankan parents to UK

A Kettering accountant has appealed against a Home Office refusal to allow him to be re-united with his ailing Sri Lanka parents in the UK. Sivasoruban Sivasubramani, 38, of Rockingham Road, Kettering, told a Birmingham Immigration and Asylum Tribunal that his parents, who are Tamils, felt vunerable in Sri Lanka and wanted to join him and his wife in Kettering. The Tamil community are said to still be facing trouble with government troops despite an end to the civil war in 2009. As a result Mr Sivasubramani’s parents are said to have recently moved to another part of Sri Lanka.  Mr Sivasubramani told the tribunal his 74-year-old father had recently been conned out of £350 and had been injured in an accident.
