Mahinda Makes More false Promises

8th August 2015 // 0 Comments

Sri Lankans often witness many colourful policy statements and populist proposals presented during election times. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is also a political leader belonging to the same category, who has given various promises to the people during his political career. However, the ‘Mahinda Chinthana’ programme presented by him during his two terms in office must be carefully looked into, in retrospect. The term Mahinda Chinthana first entered in to the Sri Lankan political arena in 2005 with the launch of his inaugural Presidential Election manifesto. The prime intention of Mahinda Chinthana at the time was to put an end to the bloody war that was raging in Sri Lanka for 30 long years. With the end of the war on May 19, 2009, Rajapaksa […]

8th August 2015 // 0 Comments

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to expedite decentralization of power in Sri Lanka — for the cause of Tamil Eelam. Jayalalithaa presented a memorandum listing various demands to Modi when he went to her residence after launching the National Handloom Day and India Handloom brand here. The meeting between Modi and Jayalalithaa lasted around 50 minutes. The chief minister also hosted lunch for Modi. In her memorandum, Jayalalithaa said India had a commitment to protect the Tamil minority community in Sri Lanka. She said the Tamils’ distinct identity and cultural presence in Sri Lanka, particularly in the northeast, was the guiding principle behind the India-Sri Lanka accord of 1987. That accord, which led to […]

The Political Emancipation Of Sri Lanka

8th August 2015 // 0 Comments

By Dayapala Thiranagama – The current parliamentary election presents a clear division between democratic forces and anti-democratic forces. A victory for democracy would offer a generational chance of resolving some of the fault lines in Sri Lankan society. The Rajapaksa regime won the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) but they used this victory to defeat the legitimate democratic aspirations of the Tamil people. When the Muslim community was attacked the law was not applied and the perpetrators got away scott-free. The war victory was also used to plunder state resources, cover up frauds and corruption and augment personal wealth. Their authoritarian rule maintaining the white van culture brazenly violated the right to life and ’disappeared’ journalists as well as political opponents. […]

SLFP under Mahinda is full of corrupt people – Ranatunga

8th August 2015 // 0 Comments

There are more than 40 corrupt politicians going through inquiries.  Chandrika does not want to work with the corrupt people in the SLFP.  Believe me they don’t want to have good people in the UPFA. They only want people who are corrupt, who create issues with religion and caste. They throw us out and protect the corrupt people. This is the sad story of the SLFP.  Chandrika Kumaratunga will never support the Sri Lanka Freedom Party as long as there are corrupt and unwanted people in it, said Minister of Ports Shipping and Aviation Arjuna Ranatunga. “How can Chandrika Kumaratunga support the SLFP? That party is full of corrupt people. She does not want to work with such people in SLFP. I am sure till […]

In his letter, Shivajilingam noted that the UN’s failure to protect the Tamil people in 2009 was termed as “systemic failure” of the UN by the UN’s own “Report of the UN Secretary General’s Internal Review Panel on UN Action in Sri Lanka” released in November 2012 by the head of the Panel Charles Petrie. He says the Tamil people sincerely hope that the UN System will not victimize the Tamils again and hope the UN will accommodate their request to adequately and properly conduct the judicial process […]
