Will the government accept Karuna’s Challenge?

16th October 2015 // 0 Comments

Will the government accept Karuna’s Challenge? Novelist Alan Moore wrote, “The people of the country shouldn’t be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.” That is what we have heard and learnt. However, we cannot say the same of what Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman meant, when he blatantly challenged the Yahapalana Government to arrest him, if they were to find any allegations against him. Karuna Amman had bravely challenged the authorities to try and arrest him; which was followed by him saying that he doesn’t fear the government and what they have in store for individuals like him. Basically, what he did was accuse the current Yahapalna Government of exacting political revenge from those who stood in protest of them […]

COLOMBO: A group of young entrepreneurs from Tamil Nadu who visited Tamil-speaking Northern Sri Lanka recently to scout for trade and investment opportunities, have set for themselves a parallel goal – to uplift, through their investments, the condition of the youth and women, especially young war widows. “We were moved by the plight of the 70,000 war widows in the North and East. They can be helped by our investments in the agricultural, garment and sari manufacturing sectors. The youth of the North are educated, but lack entrepreneurial and technical skills. Our investments can create and nurture these skills,” said R. Vignesh, one of the leaders of the 44-member delegation of the Dindigul Chapter of the Young Entrepreneurs School (YES) which toured Lanka between October […]

Sri Lanka & The Politics Of Justice

15th October 2015 // 0 Comments

There are signs that Sri Lanka’s new government understands the challenges involved. For Sri Lanka it’s been something of a roller-coaster start to the autumn. First, mid-August parliamentary elections handed former president Mahinda Rajapaksa his second defeat of the year at the polls, confirming that the new political era heralded by Maithripala Sirisena’s surprise victory in January presidential polls really was the genuine article. Then almost before the country had time to draw breath it was catapulted into the international arena, in the shape of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC)’s 30th session that opened in Geneva in mid-September. Ever since Sri Lanka’s 26 year […]
