8th October 2015 // 0 Comments

Last week, Tamil children in the North of Sri Lanka reportedly took to the streets to demand the release of their parents detained for years[1] under anti-terror laws[2]. This was hardly reported in mainstream Sri Lankan media. But many Sri Lankan media reported that two suspects in the Town Hall bomb case of 1999 (injuring former President Kumaratunga and countless others and killing 26[3]) were sentenced to 290 and 300 years respectively. 15-16 years for a conviction / release of a suspect The two suspects were remanded on 18th September 2000 (possibly arrested even before that) under the PTA[4]. Tamils need leadership, not hypocrisy of powers: Prof Ramasamy

8th October 2015 // 0 Comments

“United Nations, super powers, regional powers or self-seeking Tamil politicians cannot address the real grievances of Tamils. It is only Tamils under a good and dedicated leadership can move forward,” said Deputy Chief Minister of Penang state in Malaysia, Professor P. Ramasamy, a long time advocate of the rights of Eezham Tamils in an article to TamilNet on Tuesday. While the actual war saw the murder of Eelam Tamils and the most despicable sexual violence of rape unleashed among Tamil women, it was after the war that the Eelam Tamil nation was plundered of its wealth, Professor Ramasamy said. “The LTTE might not be around; however, the hopes, aspirations and the future agenda of Tamils for ultimate solution were set up by none other than […]

Noise in the House

8th October 2015 // 0 Comments

All hell broke loose in Parliament on Tuesday when a group of UPFA MPs staged a protest against the proposed war crimes investigation against Sri Lanka. They took out a banner condemning what they called a government move to set up a hybrid court in all but name. Some government MPs tried to suppress the protest and the attendant melee caused sittings to be suspended for ten minutes. It was a supreme irony that Parliament was thrown into turmoil in that manner while Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, currently in Japan, was extolling the virtues of consensus and peaceful assembly. “Let’s meet in harmony, discuss in harmony and depart in harmony,” he said quoting the Buddha. Tuesday’s rumpus in Parliament presages more trouble for the government […]

‘I should not have taken my father to the UN’

8th October 2015 // 0 Comments

Daham Sirisena, son of Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena, today admitted that he should not have taken his father on his recent trip to the UN General Assembly after significant public backlash caused a media uproar. In a Facebook update posted few days ago, Daham said, ‘I was officially invited to the UN as part of the Sri Lanka delegation to participate in youth session (a.k.a. lets have chat and then go get plastered on UN expenses). Unfortunately my mother could not attend and my father decided to take up her invite. The freeloader. Of course it was a mistake to agree to this decision as was evidenced by his lack of decorum during the trip – not only did he fail to properly tuck […]

Daham Sirisena, the entertainer

8th October 2015 // 0 Comments

I’ve had a fantastic time reading all that’s being written about Daham Sirisena. The Big D, as I now think of him, is a fantastic creature. I mean, who wouldn’t want a walking, talking, Facebook-ing PR nightmare for a son, am I right? Let’s assume for a moment that Maithripala Sirisena actually reads this (hah! Fat chance). Mr Sirisena, here’s a question for you: ARE YOU STUPID? Look at him. JUST LOOK AT HIM. This is Daham Sirisena, Public Figure. His crowning achievements in life? 48,000 likes on Facebook, shaking hands with Narendra Modi, being the Lucky Sperm and sporadically waving a gun in someone’s face. By all the gods, is that what it takes to get into the UN? If so, hold my beer. […]
