Says the exercise would go a long way in establishing harmony in Sri Lanka. Bridging the gulf that divides Tamil and Sinhalese population in Sri Lanka is essential for the wellbeing of the country, former President of Sri Lanka, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, has said. Ms. Kumaratunga, who was on a private visit to Alappuzha, told The Hindu on Monday that she was involved in the national unity and reconciliation initiative being undertaken by the present government as part of confidence-building measures. “There is a huge gulf between Tamils and Sinhalese. There are schools for all communities and there are also schools of different communities. Many Tamils do not speak Sinhalese and vice-versa. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) yesterday demanded answers from the authorities on the underground secret cells at the Trincomalee Navy Camp, in light of an admission by former Navy Commander, Admiral WasanthaKarannagoda that those cells were used to detain people. In a highly charged speech in Parliament yesterday during the debate on the 2016 budget, Parliamentarian M. A. Sumanthiran questioned as to why people like Karannagoda are not being investigated over the cells. Sumanthiran quoted Karannagoda as telling the media yesterday that the cells were part of the British colonial era and was used when he was the Navy chief to detain suspects, but not torture them. Sumanthiran said that the authorities must investigate where those people who had been detained at the cells are […]

Tamils Back To Mutual Blame-Game(s)!

Ultimately, as is already beginning to happen, they would also blame the Sinhala majority for its ‘conspiracies’ to de-stabilise the Tamil leadership, branding some among the latter as ‘traitors’, as again has been the norm. Ironically, at the centre of the current phase of intra-Tamil political rivalry are two leaders, who are post-war finds without any known long association with the ‘Tamil ethnic movement’ of any […]

By this statement, he has reinforced misogyny and strengthened myths that revolve around women,” the statement posted on the Happy To Bleed […]
