Sri Lankan Tamil issues likely to resurface

Two crucial issues that played a major role in the defeat of the DMK in the 2011 election may be resurrected as poll propaganda by opposing parties after it entered into an alliance with the Congress on Saturday. Just minutes after Ghulam Nabi Azad confirmed the DMK-Congress tie up at Gopalapuram, BJP Tamil Nadu president Tamilisai Soundararajan came down heavily on the DMK. Speaking to reporters, she said the DMK quit the UPA accusing the Congress of letting down Tamils in Sri Lanka. “The DMK has to explain what has changed since 2013. Has the Congress done anything to wash its sins off? The DMK thinks it could take the memory of the people for granted. People of Tamil Nadu are not suffering from collective […]

Workers making clothes for Marks & Spencer in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India are still not being paid sufficiently, six years after the retailer promised to support the payment of a living wage in those countries. Under the British chain’s Plan A environmental and social policy, it promised to “implement a process to ensure our suppliers are able to pay workers a fair living wage” in the three south Asian countries. M&S said its target was achieved in 2015. But a report by the workers’ rights group Labour Behind the Label said workers from three factories in Sri Lanka, another three in India, and two in Bangladesh were all being paid well below the amount required for a decent standard of living. In Sri Lanka, […]

Burying differences on the Lankan Tamils issue that had rocked their nine-year-old alliance in 2013, Congress and DMK today decided to come together to fight the upcoming Assembly polls in the state. The national party described the regional outfit as the “most dependable partner” as senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad formalised the alliance with DMK President M Karunanidhi here, three years after the latter snapped ties accusing the Congress of betraying the Sri Lankan Tamils. “The party has decided at our national level and also at Karunanidhi ji’s level and other esteemed leaders of the DMK that we will be fighting this election together; we will have an alliance,” Azad told reporters after meeting the DMK chief at his Gopalapuram residence. The leader of Opposition […]

Once Again Sri Lanka Cheats The International Community

15th February 2016 // 0 Comments

By S. V. Kirubaharan – Over the last year, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon has become an international playground for China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Iran, Russia, USA, UK and EU countries. Except for two or three, all the others supported regime change and now they are competing to have their share of gain. Some are progressing well! Unfortunately, neighbouring India, accused by the former President as being a country in favour of regime change, has not received its reasonable dividend. India is not happy about the recent developments in Sri Lanka. Regarding the ethnic conflict, they took a very lenient path but that trick didn’t work with the new government. The new government prefers to deal equally with China and India. […]

CID Sitting On Vital CCTV Footage Of Thajudeen Killing

Questions are being asked as to why the CID has still not sent the vital CCTV footage to a foreign forensic laboratory seeking expert opinion which showed the vehicle in which popular ruggerite Wasim Thajudeen was travelling, despite an order given by Colombo Additional Magistrate over a month back who directed the CID to dispatch the CCTV footage overseas as local experts did not have the necessary expertise to determine the cause behind the blast. Local experts were unable to determine the cause behind Thajudeen’s car blast which resulted in his death, even though it was captured by the CCTV footage. However, due to poor quality of the image as it had happened during night time local experts said they couldn’t come to a conclusion, […]
