USAF medical team to examine ex-LTTE combatants allegedly injected with poisonous substances

The Chief Minister of Sri Lanka’s Tamil-majority Northern Province, C.V.Wigneswaran, has said that US Air Force’s medical team, currently in the province on a goodwill visit, will examine former Tamil Tigers combatants who had fallen sick allegedly because they were injected with poisonous substances by the Sri Lankan armed forces when they were undergoing detention or rehabilitation after surrender. In the past few weeks, Tamil politicians and the media have been highlighting the death of 104 ex-combatants who had allegedly been given injections as part of an “inoculation program”. Some others had complained of physical debility after release from detention or rehabilitation. Asylum seeker who won right to live in UK after Lib Dem MP’s campaign now facing prison over sex attack

An asylum seeker who avoided deportation after a public campaign headed by an MP is facing jail after admitting sexual assault. Sri Lankan-born Sivarajah Suganthan spent 37 days in a detention centre before being allowed to remain in the UK thanks to Liberal Democrat Stephen Williams. Mr Williams lobbied then-immigration minister Damian Green to grant him asylum and presented an 800-name petition to Parliament calling for the deportation threats to end. Suganthan, 31, went to live with friends in Bristol in 2011, but three years later he sexually abused a 21-year-old woman while staying at a night shelter. N Korean envoy in UK defects to South

A top North Korean diplomat who disappeared from the country’s embassy in London has defected to South Korea, officials in Seoul have confirmed. Thae Yong-ho and his family are under the government’s protection, a South Korean official said. Mr Thae was the ambassador’s deputy and is thought to be the highest-ranking North Korean official ever to defect. His main mission in London had been to spread positive perceptions of the North Korean leadership. He had been due to return to Pyongyang with his wife and children. Mr Thae had come under pressure from his government to quash growing criticism of North Korea’s human rights record, sources say. Tamil women demand more space in politics at Jaffna consultations

A group of Tamil women called for a quota for female politicians to be instituted during consultations by the Jaffna Zonal Task Force of the Consultation Task Force earlier this month. At the consultation which happened at the Jaffna Kachcheri on August 5, a group of Tamil women including a local TNA village councillor and the Women’s Society President, expressed frustration at the lack of political space given to women by both the TNA and the NPC. Startling accusation by Tamil politicians who say the ex-combatants had claimed physically disability as a result. Sri Lanka’s Tamil politicians have alleged that over 100 LTTE cadres at rehabilitation centres were injected with poison leading to their deaths, prompting the government to reject their claims on Thursday.
