‘We ask for federalism, not separation’

‘We ask for federalism, not separation’ C.V.Wigneswaran Northern Province Chief Minister retired Justice C.V.Wigneswaran responding to the Sunday Observer on their queries as to why he organised the demonstration in Jaffna, claimed, their action has been given distorted interpretations by vested interests. Q: Why do you believe the federal solution is the only viable solution for issues faced by the North and East Tamils? Response- A federal system divides up power between a strong national government and smaller local governments. When there are ethnic differences among peoples occupying a country and more so when they occupy defined and definite areas of residence, this is the ideal system to preserve the culture and backgrounds of the minorities. Canada and Switzerland are good examples of how the […]

Terrorism: All Sides Must Be Held Accountable!

4th October 2016 // 0 Comments

By Pitasanna Shanmugathas – Pitasanna Shanmugathas This article is an attempt to clarify misunderstandings people have from an earlier article I wrote. I have been vocal in criticizing both the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government for committing egregious human rights violations. Both sides must be held accountable. Violence on both sides is unjustifiable. The LTTE has committed egregious human rights abuses such as using civilians as human shields, killing political dissidents (such as Neelan Tiruchelvam and Rajini Thiranagama), forcibly conscripting children to fight, killing leaders of rival factions, the forcible expulsion of Muslims, among other egregious atrocities. As a member of the Tamil community, I am extremely critical of the actions committed by the LTTE because the main victims of their actions have been […]

by Thushari Nathaniel EPRLF Leader and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) member Suresh Premachandran claims that the recent ‘Ezhuga Thamil’ rally that Chief Minister of Northern Province C. V. Wigneswaran organised with a march from the opposite of the Nallur Kandasami Hindu Temple as well as from Jaffna University was a rousing success. In an interview with The Sunday Leader he said that the success of the rally clearly indicates that the Tamil people in the North were fed up with the TNA leadership. He also said that they were disappointed in the TNA because they have failed to raise the Tamil people’s concerns with the central government. The government promised to release lands and resettle the displaced on their own lands, but they are now […]

The Sinhale National Front lodged a complaint against Northern Province Chief Minister C. V. Wigneswaran, yesterday, at the Police Head Quarters alleging that his statements are evoking racial tension among communities. The organisation highlighted that his recent remarks regarding the removal of army camps from the Northern Province could be a push towards a separatist agenda. Sinhale President Agulugalle SiriJinananda Thero claimed Wigneswaran is behaving in a manner which may give rise to terrorism and separatism in the country again. “Wigneswaran has demanded that army camps in Northern Province should be removed and that temples should not be built in the North.
