https://www.reuters.com/article/us-sri-lanka-clashes-insight/police-politicians-accused-of-joining-sri-lankas-anti-muslim-riots-idUSKBN1H102Q KANDY, Sri Lanka (Reuters) – Police and politicians backed by the country’s former strongman President Mahinda Rajapaksa joined anti-Muslim riots that rocked Sri Lanka’s Kandy district this month, according to witnesses, officials and CCTV footage reviewed by Reuters. Scores of Muslim mosques, homes and businesses were destroyed as mobs ran amok for three days in Kandy, the central highlands district previously known for its diversity and tolerance. The government declared a state of emergency and blocked social media platforms for a week to control the unrest. The role of police and some local Buddhist politicians suggests the Sri Lankan government lost control of elements of its security forces, and that the violence was more than a spontaneous outbreak fueled by fringe Buddhist extremists and […]

Head of the FBI was scuttled because the Mafia objected!

25th March 2018 // 0 Comments

By Kumar David Imagine if appointment of a Head of the FBI was scuttled because the Mafia objected! Sarath Fonseka was denied appointment as Law & Order Minister, the President said, because DIGs and senior policemen, who SF alleges are drug-runners and villains, objected. The real reason however is that President Sirisena, now imploring Basil and Mahinda for I don’t know what, will not appoint a Minister who will drag scoundrels of the previous regime before prosecutors and magistrates. I don’t know him, and don’t know much about the new L&O Minister Madduma Bandara; efforts to find out from political contacts and friends drew little information. What I was able to elicit was that he is a decent bloke who conducts himself well, but he […]

25th March 2018 // 0 Comments

They said the former envoy is known to be a proxy for certain Sri Lankan individuals, who have invested billions of US dollars of black money in that country and taking him out at this stage would make other similar investors jittery and they would attempt to move out, the officials explained. “Unlike other Gulf and Arab states in the region, the UAE has limited oil reserves and the country depends […]

Based on latest inside information reports reaching Lanka e news , foolish  Sirisena nicknamed  Sillysena, by promoting  the no confidence motion  via  his cronies and lackeys against his own P.M. is playing into the hands of most Machiavellian and murderous Rajapakses of the most notorious den of confirmed crooks and criminals  who were rejected by the people […]

Despite Buddhist Monks Spewing Race Hatred as Captured on TV Cameras and recordings There is Little Action Taken by the Senior Clergy Other than the Belated Issuing of Statements.

Despite Buddhist Monks Spewing Race Hatred as Captured on TV Cameras and recordings There is Little Action Taken by the Senior Clergy Other than the Belated Issuing of Statements. By Kishali Pinto jayawardene There is a cheery though dangerously complacent view articulated by senior Muslim politicians, (and echoed by others),that the recent communal violence in Ampara and Kandy was perpetrated through organised attacks by ‘outsiders’ on Muslim residents of those areas. Only part of the truth As is often the case, this explanation is only part of the truth. Certainly thugs masquerading as monks and racist organisations wrapping the banner of ‘Sinhala Buddhist militants’ around them, (surely an oxymoron if there ever was one) engaged in illegal hate speech and were responsible for bringing organized mobs […]

Will sacrificing Rabil help the UNP?

25th March 2018 // 0 Comments

by C.A. Chandraprema The no confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has taken the political centrestage. In normal circumstances, this no confidence motion need not have been taken seriously at all. The UNP has 106 MPs and their allies the TNA has 17 and that alone would have sufficed to render the no confidence motion redundant even before it was taken up for debate. But this no confidence motion was not presented in parliament under normal circumstances. The Joint Opposition which submitted the motion has only 52 MPs. The SLFP group in the government which may support it, another 44, bringing the total number of those who may vote for the motion to a maximum of 96. It is certain that not all in […]

Jayasuriya was not too pleased with the remark that hinted that he could become Prime Minister ousting Wickremesinghe. Mama oya sweep ticket walata kadera nehe or I am not […]

Why Ranil Is Still Needed

23rd March 2018 // 0 Comments

By Shyamon Jayasinghe – Shyamon Jayasinghe “Mahinda picked up this part of the opportunistic psychology of our politicians when he famously stated that he runs a barber saloon where MPs can walk-in and walk out. What an amazing metaphor!” Cool The Joint Opposition move to pass a vote of no-confidence in the Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, will come a cropper. Ranil knows that best as he has tersely told a group of opposition pollies (Australia slang for ‘politicians’), “Come on! present  the motion in Parliament and we will defeat that.” His own UNP MPs, he advised not to panic over the motion because it has not even been presented to the Speaker. In his 40 year-long political history Ranil Wickremesinghe has never been observed panicking. What is it that invests him […]

Sri Lanka: continued Human Rights Council scrutiny needed until justice commitments met in full

23rd March 2018 // 0 Comments

In this Council, we often talk about the importance of implementation. We can pass all the resolutions we like, but none of it matters if it doesn’t translate into actual progress for people on the ground. Sri Lanka’s co-sponsorship of resolution 30/1 in October 2015 represented a moment of hope, of opportunity, the prospect of justice and accountability for the tens of thousands of victims of the country’s brutal civil war. In that resolution, Sri Lanka pledged to set up four transitional justice mechanisms to promote “justice, reconciliation and human rights” in the country. These included an accountability mechanism involving international judges, prosecutors, and investigators; a truth and reconciliation mechanism; an office of missing persons; and an office for reparations. Thus far only the Office […]
