The cabinet reshuffle of the unity Government took place today with President Maithripala Sirisena handing over the appointment letters. Minister Gayantha Karunatillake told reporters that some Ministers continue to hold their previous portfolios while a few Ministers got fresh appointment letters as they were given additional responsibilities. The additional responsibilities includes the Ministries earlier held by 16 Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Ministers who had resigned from their posts. In all 18 Ministers got fresh appointment letters today from President Maithripala Sirisena. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) will support the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, if a permanent solution to the ethnic problem is also proposed, TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran says. Sumanthiran has said so, in a media statement, on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, proposed by the JVP, seeking the abolition of the executive presidency. Sumanthiran said: “We support the abolishing of the executive presidency. This system was introduced in 1978 and ever since it has lead to a lot of problems. In 2015, President Sirisena promised to scrap the post. Just like this the ethnic problem has created issues in Sri Lanka. A lot of people have died because of this. So equal attention should be paid to solving this as well.
The minority parties have requested from the government to include them too in the agreement to be signed for the consensus government between the two main parties for the next 18 months, government sources said. It is reported that a number of minority parties which represent the United National Front (UNF) have made such requests. Several parties such as Sri Lanka Muslim Congress led by Rauf Hakeem, All Ceylon Makkal Congress of Rishard Badudeen and the Tamil Progressive Alliance have reportedly made such requests during the last general election, the Democratic People’s Front under the leadership of Mano Ganesan, National Workers Congress of P.Digambaran and Up Country People’s Front of Radha Krishanan contested under the United National Front.
