JO MP Dilum Amunugama before TID

By Skandha Gunasekara Joint Opposition Parliamentarian Dilum Amunagma is to appear before the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) today for questioning. Police media spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara told the Daily FT that the Parliamentarian had been summoned by the TID to be questioned with regard to the communal violence that took place in the Kandy district in March. “He has been summoned by the TID for questioning on Tuesday morning,” he said, adding that the Parliamentarian would be interrogated at TID headquarters in Colombo.  Meanwhile, the leader of the Sinhala extremist group Mahason Balakaya, Amith Weerasinghe, has been further remanded till 28 May along with others who were remanded in connection with the communal riots in Digana, Theldeniya and other parts of the Kandy district. Army to release another 522 acres of private lands in North and East after 10 years.

The Sri Lanka Army has agreed to further release 522 acres of private lands in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, to resettle the displaced community presently living in the welfare centres or in the residences of their friends and relatives, amidst much difficulty. The Government has already released 4,992.84 acres of private and Government lands in the Northern and Eastern Provinces used by the three forces during the conflict situation. The lands that are not further needed have already been released to their original owners with the consent of the Ministry of Defence. It was too early to reveal the name of the Joint Opposition’s presidential candidate, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday. ‘People are talking about former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa as a popular presidential candidate, but he has not yet discussed the matter with me,” the ex-President said.
