Adm W’wardene behind LCdr H’chi’s disappearance

The CID yesterday (31), informed Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that former Navy Commander and current Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ravindra Wijegunawardene was connected to the disappearance of Lieutenant Commander Prasad Hettiarachchi, a suspect charged with the abduction and disappearance of 11 children. Attorney Achala Seneviratne, appearing for the aggrieved parties, questioned the CID on the progress made in their investigations into Hettiarachchi’s disappearance. Abolish PTA without compromising national security: HRCSL

The Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) should be abolished in order to prevent violations of citizen’s human rights without posing any threat to national security, Chairperson of Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) Dr. Deepika Udugama said yesterday. Suspect in Lasantha’s murder submits confidential statement to court

A former police officer, who is in remand custody for his alleged involvement in the murder of The Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge had made a confidential statement to the court today about the nine-year old crime, the Colombo Page reported. Former Crimes Office-In-Charge of the Mount Lavinia Police Sub Inspector Tissa Siri Sugathapala has given a confidential statement to the Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Mohammed Mihal today. The suspect was brought to the court from the Welikada remand prison and the statement was recorded for over three and half hours. The case will be taken up tomorrow.
