22nd June 2018 // 0 Comments

The United States on Wednesday (20), made a surprise move by removing itself from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) alleging that the international body was acting against Israel with regard to the conflict with Palestine. The UNHRC has been a hot topic in Sri Lanka since 2009, and after allegations of human rights violations and war crimes gained momentum internationally. Sri Lanka’s relationship with the UN has not been rosy ever since these allegations took centre stage in March each year during the UN Human Rights Council sessions. The manner in which Sri Lanka’s previous regime handled the situation in the international arena also did not go down well with the UN. However, things changed when the new Government took over. In fact, […]

Hold referendum on Sinhala-Tamil coexistence: Sritharan

22nd June 2018 // 0 Comments

The government should hold a referendum to determine whether the Sinhalese and the Tamils were willing to coexist with each other, TNA MP Sivagnanam Sritharan told Parliament yesterday. He said the government had not considered the needs of the Northern people and claimed that a sports stadium constructed in Kilinochchi during the previous regime was being held by the army. The MP said the then Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage had profited from the construction of the stadium. Mr. Aluthgamage rejected this allegation and said the TNA MP was up to mischief. Meanwhile, State Minister Harsha De Silva criticized MP Sritharan for still clinging on to extremist ideologies. “The pre-hospital ambulance service has helped the people in the North but you didn’t even have the courtesy […]

Sinhala Buddhist state with a ‘Hitler and military rule’ + Tamil Eelam

22nd June 2018 // 0 Comments

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka “If we believe absurdities, we shall commit atrocities.” — Voltaire I was more alarmed by what I saw and heard on TV news last evening than by anything I have seen or heard in the Sri Lankan media throughout my life. What I saw and heard was the most dangerous and morally debased public statement, i.e. a statement made in public and concerning public, not private affairs, I have ever heard uttered in this country. It would be the most dangerous public statement that could be uttered in any country in the world. While it was on TV news on two channels, I need to reproduce fairly, what happened. This is how Lanka C news, a website sympathetic to the occasion, filed […]

ECONOMYNEXT – A top Buddhist monk has asked Sri Lanka’s former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to become another “ Hitler” who is known to have killed up to six million Jews in the Holocaust. A chief priest of the Asgiriya chapter, Venduruwe Upali, blessed Rajapaksa on his 69th birthday Wednesday by encouraging him to return to power and “rebuild the country” even if it means establishing military rule. The monk, delivering a sermon at the private home of Rajapaksa, prayed that the youngest among the Rajapaksa siblings should be the next leader of Sri Lanka as the country needed a “Sinhala Buddhist leader.” “As the clergy, we feel the country needs a religious leader… Some people have described you as a Hitler,” the venerable monk […]

22nd June 2018 // 0 Comments

The joint opposition said today people should stop paying taxes to the government, if it continues with its move to pay compensation to ex-LTTE combatants. JO member and MP Wimal Weerawansa told a news conference that no country in the world had ever paid compensation to ex-terrorists unlike what Sri Lanka was attempting to do and added that such moves would not contribute towards reconciliation. He said the government was hoping to pay compensation to ex-LTTE combatants by using tax payers money saying Sri Lanka will be the first in the world to pay compensation to terrorists. “The compensation will not be paid by using the money of government bigwigs. Compensation has still not been paid to the victims of the Meethotamulla garbage dump tragedy […]

US repeating Lanka’s allegations against UNHRC

22nd June 2018 // 0 Comments

By Shamindra Ferdinando Having had brazenly used the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to adopt an anti-Sri Lanka Resolution in Oct 2015 on the basis of unsubstantiated war crimes allegations, the US has endorsed what we have been saying with regard to the inherent bias and lack of objectivity on the part of the UN agency, former External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris says. Responding to a query by The Island, Prof. Peiris, yesterday, alleged that the Geneva body always treated Sri Lanka with preconceived notions and shuts its eyes to compelling evidence contrary to the conclusions which they wished to reach. Prof. Peiris pointed out that US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley was quoted in the international media as having […]
