28th June 2018 // 0 Comments

The Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) is going to present its Voluntary National Review (VNR) during the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which will take place from 09 to 18 July 2018 at UN Headquarters in New York.  The GoSL has submitted the Report of Sri Lanka Voluntary National Review on 18 June 2018. The VNR is a critical component of the review and implementation of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).  Report of Sri Lanka VNR has blocked out the entire UNHRC process and information related to UNHRC resolution 30/1. It has totally ignored its earlier commitment to the international community regarding the implementation of transitional justice mechanisms.  “No Sustainable Development without Transitional Justice”  Through the resolutions 30/1 – the […]

The Sri Lankan authorities must urgently take action against those threatening human rights defender Sandhya Eknaligoda, Amnesty International said today. Over recent days, Sandhya Eknaligoda, a distinguished campaigner against enforced disappearances and the wife of disappeared cartoonist Prageeth Ekneligoda, has been subject to a barrage of hate, abuse, intimidation, harassment and death threats on social media. “The threats against Sandhya Eknaligoda are extremely worrying. The Sri Lankan authorities must urgently and effectively take appropriate action against those who seek to cause her harm,” said Dinushika Dissanayake, Deputy South Asia Director at Amnesty International. The threats against Sandhya Eknaligoda have escalated ever since the Homagama Magistrate’s Court convicted prominent Buddhist nationalist monk, Galagodatte Gnanasara Thero, on 24 May 2018 for threatening her outside the court building […]

Sri Lanka sleepwalking into a Rajapaksa dynasty: Prof. Sally

28th June 2018 // 0 Comments

Sri Lanka is sleepwalking into a Rajapaksa dynasty characterized by illiberal democracy, state-dominated inefficient capitalism and ethnic chauvinism, after a failed test of good governance by an unholy coalition of left and right wing parties for three years, according to Prof. Razeen Sally, Chairman of Colombo-based think tank, the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS). Delivering a public lecture last week on the topic ‘Capitalism in Asia and what it means for Sri Lanka’, organised by Advocata Institute – an open market advocacy – Prof. Sally said the present government is doing its best towards a Rajapaksa restoration. “It can sleepwalk its way back to a combination of illiberal democracy, state-led very inefficient capitalism and ethnic chauvinism or in other words, it can walk its way […]

The NYT said it found evidence showing that the $7.6 million had been paid from the China Harbour’s account at Standard Chartered Bank to affiliates of Rajapaksa’s campaign, much more than the $1.14 million reported by the state-run Daily News in July 2015. The Daily News had reported that 149 million rupees was given by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to the Rajapaksa campaign and also named some of the people who accepted cheques. 28th June 2018 // 0 Comments

By Shamindra Ferdinando Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Chairman and top Joint Opposition spokesman Prof. G.L. Peiris on Monday (June 25) strongly opposed any special arrangement between the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government and the Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran to put off elections to the NPC. Prof. Peiris emphasized there couldn’t be such an exclusive agreement between the government and a particular provincial administration especially against the backdrop of postponement of elections scheduled for Sabaragamuwa, Eastern and North Central Provincial Councils polls last year. SLPP Chairman said so at a media briefing at Nelum Mawatha, Battaramulla office of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Wigneswaran recently declared that he had no objection to the postponement of the elections to his provincial council provided that his term of […]

28th June 2018 // 0 Comments

By Ranga Jayasuriya Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa has skeletons though, may not be in his closet, but wherever white vans had dumped victims during his abduction prone tenure as the Defence Secretary. But, not even by a long shot did he go any close to Hitler. Last week, when a high priest publicly urged him to become a Hitler, it was not clear whether the aspiring presidential candidate took it as a compliment or as a personal affront. The Anunayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, Ven Vedaruvey Upali Thera has reportedly told Mr. Rajapaksa: “if they call you Hitler, even become a Hitler and establish the military rule and develop the country.” Those were unusual birthday blessings reportedly delivered at an alms-giving to mark the 69th birthday of […]

US ambassador Atul Keshap has told ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa to look for another option as Gotabhaya Rajapaksa cannot contest the 2020 presidential election. Meeting him a few days ago at his Wijerama Mawatha home, Keshap briefed Mahinda about the US government stand with regard to Gotabhaya and the presidential polls. The ambassador was making a farewell call, as he is to end his term in a few days’ time. The US Interior Ministry has initiated an investigation against its citizen Gotabhaya over a financial crime. Therefore, he cannot abandon his UN citizenship. But, he is misleading the public by saying that he will do so within two months.   Mahinda is looking for a reason to prevent Gotabhaya from contesting, and the US has now […]

Gotler Or Hitler, Two Sides Of The Same Coin By Vishwamithra – “Democracy; the fools have a right to vote. Dictatorship; the fools have a right to rule” ~Bertrand Russell  The whole of Sri Lankan society, at least the rumor-prone Colombo pukka sahibs, went berserk when they heard a ‘sermon’ of some sort from a so-called highly-placed Buddhist Monk of the Asgiriya Chapter asking a notorious sibling of Mahinda Rajapaksa to take control of the country and rule like Hitler, who is really the personification of ‘man’s inhumanity to man’.  A widely read online news site reported thus: ‘Venerable Vendaruwe Upali Thero, the Anunayaka of the Asgiriya Chapter delivering an anusasana (sermon) on the occasion of an almsgiving marking the 69th birthday of Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that he should opt for military rule […]
