VIJAYAKALA UNDER FIRE FOR LTTE REMARKS; HAILED AS HERO IN JAFFNA

9th July 2018 // 0 Comments

After widespread condemnation from all quarters in the south following her controversial statement about the LTTE, former State Minister of Children’s Affairs Vijayakala Maheswaran was forced to resign her portfolio late last week, but all over the streets of Jaffna, posters appeared hailing her ‘sacrifice for the Tamil people.’ Nearly a decade after the end of the war and the defeat of the LTTE by Government troops, the hot button issue highlighted deep ethnic divisions and polarisation within Sri Lankan society. Posters in Jaffna read “Selfless Politics: Then, Maheswaran sacrificed his life for the Tamil people’s peace. Now, ‘Female Tamil Leader’ Vijayakala resigns her post.” Last Monday, addressing a public function held at the Weerasingham Hall, the State Minister said, “a six-year-old innocent child has […]

SRI LANKA’S NEW RACIST RIGHT-WING POLITICS

9th July 2018 // 0 Comments

There are two new developments in Sri Lanka’s contemporary politics which is getting crystalized and clearer these days. They are: (a) the consolidation of a hard right-wing alternative to a weak and shaky democratic regime option, and (b) the projection of an ex-military officer as the embodiment of the new right-wing agenda. At the core of the first are groups of Buddhist monks, and retired military and navy officers who took part in the final phase of the war against the LTTE. This essay comments on the first of the two right-wing political formations, the new movement of Buddhist monks, that has openly expressed its desire to see a ‘Hitler’ type military ruler winning Sri Lanka’s next presidential election due in late 2019. The new […]

Sri Lanka buries China-related corruption probes?

9th July 2018 // 0 Comments

ECONOMYNEXT – Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has publicly called for a fresh probe into alleged foreign funding of former president’s re-election bid, but several other high-profile China-related investigations remain in limbo. At least three mega corruption cases involving Chinese state-owned firms have either been moth-balled or deliberately put on hold, according to officials familiar with the cases. These graft cases are in addition to the alleged campaign funding by the Chinese. In July 2015, both the police and the Central Bank’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) investigated ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa allegedly receiving billions of rupees in funding for his 2015 election campaign, but the investigation stalled due to political pressure. The investigations began after unusual payments were made from a Standard Chartered Bank account of China […]

Rajapaksas Should Recall That the “New York Times” Once Defied the US President and Executive by Publishing “The Pentagon Papers” in a Landmark Achivement in Journalism. By Sarath de Alwis The phrase ‘Cough up a Port’ held the essence of the New York Times story. It compacted the global perception of the Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port and its progression to date, into the finite space of the simple phrase – Sri Lanka coughed up a port to China. The ‘cough’ metaphor made Mahinda Rajapaksa acolytes puke an unbelievable quantity of vitriol and venom at two Sri Lankan journalists who professionally assisted the NYT journalist to carry out her assignment in the form of logistical support and background material. Reasonable minds are baffled by the incendiary indignation […]

6th July 2018 // 0 Comments

By Ameer Ali – Dr. Ameer Ali State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran’s emotional outburst in welcoming the return of LTTE has obviously and legitimately provoked condemnation both inside and outside the parliament. This writer is equally disturbed by her thoughtless reference to a group of megalomaniacs who knew how to take up the gun but did not know when to put it down. Yet, Vijayakala’s verbal bomb blast must be contextualised.   The nation is nearing a decade since LTTE was defeated and civil war came to an end. Jaffna has been rebuilt partly due to infrastructure development undertaken by the MR regime and partly due to massive inflow of funds from expatriate Tamils. Jaffna has changed its skyline so rapidly that it is difficult for an outsider to detect any visual […]

Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara (Retd.), a notorious hawk, aggressively anti-13A agitator and Sinhala-Buddhist ultra-nationalist By Dr.Dayan Jayatilleka ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’ was the title of the best Rod Stewart album! The landmark Viyath Maga event at the Shangri-La Hotel opened with the image in the very first slide, which showed Gotabaya Rajapaksa with only one other person in the frame, leaning over the shoulder of the seated GR. That was Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara (Retd.), a notorious hawk, aggressively anti-13A agitator and Sinhala-Buddhist ultra-nationalist, rejected by the Sinhala voters of Digamadulla in the Eastern Province in favour of the non-racist progressive from the JO, Wimalaweera Dissanayake (who, it was revealed in Parliament, criticized Weerasekara’s demagoguery in Ampara during the local government election campaign). If he were in the […]
