Cat-And-Mouse Games & The Political Implications Of MAHINDA-MODI Meeting

14th September 2018 // 0 Comments

By Rasika Jayakody – Rasika Jayakody China’s entry into the rural infrastructure and plantation sector in Sri Lanka is an indication of what the Asian superpower is becoming, or has already become, to Sri Lanka: a rich friend slowly buying you over by throwing money at your every problem. In the first three years of this government, China’s involvement in Sri Lanka was confined to several mammoth development projects in Colombo and down south. China also acquired operations of the newly constructed port in Hambantota on a 99-year lease. Although China’s move to acquire Hambantota alarmed India, there wasn’t any explicit show of resentment by New Delhi, at least on diplomatic and political levels. This year, however, China advanced into two other sectors in Sri Lanka – […]

Gota’s dream to become president goes up in smoke ! US Supreme Court delivers verdict …

13th September 2018 // 0 Comments

(Lanka e News – 2018.Sep.13, 9.10PM) It was just yesterday (12) Mahinda Rajapakse announced while he was in India that if he cannot contest at the next presidential election , it will be one of his brothers who will be the presidential candidate. However based on a Supreme court decision delivered in 1999 in the U.S . neither Basil nor Gota , both of whom are dual citizens can be a presidential candidate in Sri Lanka(SL) . Under the new laws in SL ,because a dual citizen cannot contest a parliamentary election , he/she cannot be a presidential candidate. Hence , if Basil or Gota is to contest the presidential election they must divest themselves of the dual citizenship . According to the 1999 US […]

In Sri Lanka the Term “Patriot” is Defined as one who Defends Military Heroes Whatever the crime they do, and a “Traitor”as One Who Dares to Scrutinize Their Actions.

In Sri Lanka the Term “Patriot” is Sometimes Defined as one who Defends Military Heroes Whatever the Charges Against Them and a “Traitor”as One Who Dares to Scrutinize Their Actions. By Priyan Dias Much rhetoric has been used in various media over the years, and recently too, on the subject of patriots and traitors. I feel constrained to express my views as well. Samuel Johnson in his Dictionary (1755) defined a patriot as “One whose ruling passion is the love of his country.” This is certainly a laudable goal and worthy of emulation by all citizens; it suggests a cause bigger than one’s self and hints at a sacrificial character. Why then did he also say that “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel”? […]

Mass Graves, Disappearances, OMP, PTA – Justice for Tamil Victims?

12th September 2018 // 0 Comments

By Kumarathasan Rasingam The culture of impunity to the security forces under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act [PTA] and their licence to kill, especially the Tamils, caused several disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Sri Lanka. It is to be noted that the Mass Graves, Disappearances and the Prevention of Terrorism Act [PTA] are all inter-connected. The Office of the Missing Persons is toothless in powers and the clauses in this Act seem to be protecting the criminals and denying justice to the victims. The victims have no confidence in this Office and are reluctant to give evidence due to this flaw. It is strongly suspected that the Government and the Security forces are afraid of releasing the lands occupied by them and to release the […]

Powers appeasing SL State risk future instability in the island: Gajendrakumar

12th September 2018 // 0 Comments

Tue, 11 Sep 2018, 22:12 GMT] The Tamil people value the sacrifices made by their liberation movement with the highest respect. However, the SL State and its military show relentless intolerance against every attempt by the Tamils in the North-East to honour the sites of their destroyed monuments. The attitude is counter-productive, not only to the SL State but also to the global actors, who continue to appease the SL government, which refuses to reform itself, alluded Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, the leader of Tamil National Peoples’ Front, in a recent interview to TamilNet. His comments come after witnessing the hostile acts of the SL military and the SL CID during the annual festival of Nalloor temple in Jaffna this month against the move to preserve the […]

Kandasamy Ponnamma is still haunted by the sight of her son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren waving as they were taken away by Sri Lankan troops in May 2009. Ms Ponnamma wept helplessly as the bus carried off her loved ones, soon after security forces defeated Tamil Tiger rebels. She was among tens of thousands who had fled a tiny coastal strip near the north-eastern town of Mullaitivu, where the final stages of the 26-year conflict took place. That was the last time she saw her relatives. “The army promised a general amnesty to all those who had links with the Tamil rebels. That’s why my son and several others surrendered. “I still don’t know where they are or what happened to them,” says Ms Ponnamma, […]
