The arrest of a British Tamil activist on the apparent bidding of Sri Lankan officials, was an ‘outrage’ and an attack on British values, the British Tamil Conservatives (BTC) said. A Tamil political activist has been arrested and detained by British police under Terrorism Act 2000, the statute used to ban the LTTE in February 2001. Mr Sockalingam Yogalingam alias Yogi who is a TGTE MP was arrested last night by Thames Valley Police, whilst spearheading a demonstration outside Oxford Union condemning the presence of the Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as guest speaker at the student body’s event last night. Sources close to Mr Yogalingam said he was arrested on suspicion of being a member of the LTTE; pursuant to Sections 43 and 45 of Terrorism Act 2000. They were namely, former Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.
