US envoy holds talks with TNA

The new US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Alaina B. Teplitz, had talks today with the Tamil National Alliance and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya on the political crisis in the country. The TNA said that Alaina B. Teplitz met Opposition and TNA leader R. Sampanthan and discussed the political situation.  The Ambassador tweeted that she also met the Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya separately to discuss the importance of Parliament reconvening to put an end to the political crisis. She said that the democratic institutions should serve the people of Sri Lanka and let the elected representatives have their say. (Colombo Gazette) Commonwealth tells Sri Lanka to uphold democratic practices

UNP Crossover Manusha Nanayakkara Who was Appointed Deputy -Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Resigns “New” Portfolio Saying he will Accept Ranil Wickremesinghe as Legitimate Prime Minister in Accordance With Speaker’s Statement. Labour and Foreign Employment Deputy Minister Manusha Nanayakkara has resigned from his portfolio. Nanayakkara is expected to support UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. Nanayakkara was first elected to Parliament on the UNP ticket but later chose to support former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. In a strongly worded letter of resignation, Deputy Minister Manusha Nanayakkara informed President Maithripala Sirisena that it was Speaker Karu Jayasuriya’s recognition of UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the lawful Prime Minister of the country that prompted him to leave the Sirisena-Rajapaksa government. The TNA MP Sivasakthi Anandan who wanted to cross over to Mahinda group said that he will remain independent in the Parliament. It is claimed that due to exposure of ”1 million dollar and ministerial post” offer made by MR-Maithiri to to opposition MP’s in the press TNA MP Anandan who wanted to cross over to Mahinda group had been asked by Mahinda to stay  in TNA and NOT vote in favour of Ranil. Mahinda’s supporter Karuna who is accused of war crime had made statements asking for TNA to support Mahinda or at least stay away from voting in support of Ranil so that Mahinda will gain majority. By Gamini Dullewe – Every one of the 6.2 mil who voted Yahapalanaya, is in a quandary why PM Ranil Wikremesinghe nor President Maithripala Sirisena, did not take to task the Rajapaksas for Murder and Fraud with an abundance of evidence displayed in the Media, for the last three and a half years. Majority is dismayed and is despondent, why the Rule of Law was not applied to any one of them, thus allowing them to go scot free. It is my belief, that some hand, very, very powerful, restrained them from taking any action against the Rajapaksas, let alone to convict them but even to try them.
