Labour MPs pile pressure on UK Government to act on Sri Lanka

A senior group of Labour MPs is calling on the UK Government to take immediate measures to protect and promote fundamental rights and freedoms for Tamils in Sri Lanka and to stop all forced returns to the island from the UK, in light of the on-going constitutional crisis in the country. A special meeting is currently underway between President Maithripala Sirisena, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and the leaders of the parties that supported the no-confidence motion brought against the Prime Minister and the government in Parliament. Leaders of the United National Front (UNF), Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Janatha VImukthi Peramuna (JVP) are participating in the meeting with the President, which is taking place at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.
