The Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) always fought resolutely against racial, religious, caste, gender, and class discrimination. To celebrate its 83rd anniversary, the LSSP held a very well attended meeting at Eheliyagoda on 23 December. All leaders of the Socialist Alliance like Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Raja Collure attended. Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) leader Dinesh Gunawardena, being unwell, was represented by Gitanjana Gunawardena, the SLFP by the General Secretary and John Seneviratne, the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) by Douglas Devananda, and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) by MP Wakkumbura, representing […]

Maithri, Mahinda, Ranil: Three Aces or Three Jokers?

2nd January 2019 // 0 Comments

“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” ~ Aristotle   Jawaharlal Nehru wrote thus: ‘Life is like a game of cards. The hand you are dealt is determinism; the way you play it is free will’. if one examines how each of these players, Maithripala Sirisena, the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, former President and 50-day Prime Minister (PM) and Ranil Wickremesinghe the current PM, at least on the surface, look more like jokers who did not know when to play and when to quit, except perhaps Ranil Wickremesinghe who chose to wait it out allowing the others to continue to play their suicidal game. Barefaced violation of a country’s constitution is no game of cards. Instead of […]

Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa says the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is being guided by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Speaking to staff at the SLPP office in Battaramulla, Basil Rajapaksa said that the SLPP was formed with the backing of Mahinda Rajapaksa. Mahinda Rajapaksa’s links to the SLPP has created controversy with some political parties saying he cannot continue in Parliament as he had obtained SLPP membership despite being elected to Parliament as a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Mr. Basil Rajapaksa said SLPP was formed and guided by Mahinda Rajapaksa, while Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa said he was not a member of SLPP. Then a question arises, how did Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa form and guide a party while he is a member of another political party? […]

However, the SLPP supporters in the rural areas are not accepted on the same level. Supporters of SLFP and SLPP in rural areas are bitter enemies, like Cobra to Mongoose.
