Roman Catholic-Hindu Clashes Instigated By Roman Catholic Clergy On Hindu Holy Day

The Thiruketheeswaram is one of the five ancient, holy Eeswarams for Hindus on the west coast near Mannar. The approach road to the temple had some constructions which were being done again for Sivarathiri tomorrow. The Roman Catholics objected and brought the construction down under the supervision of three priests of who the leader was The Rev.Fr. Marcus. The Bishop of Mannar, The Rt. Rev. Fidelis Fernando, contacted by phone, excused comment saying he is in Colombo for minor surgery, and directed Colombo Telegraph to the Vicar General Victor Soosai Anthony. Fr. Funds allocated in 2019 Budget to strengthen reconciliation to Tamils, NOT given yet.

The Government today announced the allocation of funds in the 2019 Budget to boost post war reconciliation in the country. Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that the allocation of funds will also assist families of the missing, including families of missing soldiers and Police.  He said that the Office on Missing Persons will be adequately resourced to support families of the missing.  The Minister announced the allocation of Rs. 200 million for the secretariat for coordinating reconciliation mechanisms which operates under the Prime Minister’s office.  He said that funds will also be allocated for the Office for Reparations to be set up and operate.
