The Police Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating possible lapses on the part of Police officers in connection with probes into the brutal rape and murder of an 18-year-old girl in Jaffna a fortnight ago.
Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said at a media briefing yesterday that the SIU was trying to ascertain whether there was any negligence on the part of the police in the initial investigations process.
“The SIU has not forwarded the report as yet. Hence, after the SIU produces the report relating to the conduct of certain senior police officers, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) will then decide what action should be taken” he added.
He explained that disciplinary action by the IGP will depend on the nature of the report.
Gunasekersa added that the Colombo Crimes Division is carrying out investigations into the 130 suspects who were remanded for damaging public property and assaulting police officers during a protest against Police allegedly dragging their feet in the probe.
