Drug Pedalling in North is part of genocidal agenda – MP Sritharan

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Jaffna District Parliamentarian S. Sritharan, launching an anti narcotic campaign in Kilinochchi, described the penetration of drug pedalling in the Northern Province in recent years following the end of war in 2009, was part of a ‘ genocidal agenda’, to ruin the good values of the Northerners.

Parliamentarian Sritharan was speaking at a meeting, organized by Civil Society representatives in Kilinochchi, on creating awareness over the dangerous effects of narcotics, last week.

Several participants at the meeting pointed out the prevalence of drugs in the region and their helpless situation in seeking the assistance from the law enforcement officials in Kilinochchi. “In the post-war atmosphere, anti social activities such as the drug pedalling, alcohol, prostitution and child abuse have been systematically planted to erode the values of the Northern society. Therefore, for the past several years the Northerners face a cultural calamity”, Sritharan stated.

MPM SritharanThe Civil Society members also condemned the impunity with which local Police allowed drug dealers to work in the area. One of the participants said that there had been several instances, where the details of Police informants who had given information on drug dealers had been leaked back to the drug dealers.
“We know who is responsible for these crimes but we are now afraid to speak up as we have no faith in the Police,” a participant said.
The special meeting on the drug related activities chaired by the TNA Parliamentarian Sritharan was organized by Kokilraj of the Jaffna University and the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) Kilinochchi youth leader Suren.
