Former Minister Mervyn Silva quit yesterday as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Kelaniya electorate Organizer and has been replaced by former SLFP Puttalam electorate Organizer Thilak Waragoda.
In a letter addressed to President Maithripala Sirisena, Silva yesterday (15) said the SLFP had become the victim of a conspiracy orchestrated by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and parties associated with him, and therefore could be saved only by SLFP Chairman Sirisena and dedicated Party members.
He added that there was no reason for him to have been denied nomination for the General Election.
“It is only because I lodged a complaint against former Minister Basil Rajapaksa and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and worked towards defeating Rajapaksa, and promoting the victory of the New Democratic Front at the last Presidential Election, that I have been denied the opportunity to contest a seat In this Parliamentary Election” he explained.
“I once worked towards bringing the Rajapaksas to the fore. Unlike the Rajapaksas, I have no lust for power or to retain power. There is no doubt that people including the Maha Sangha, religious leaders, those in the Hambantota District, the Tissamaharama electorate, the Gampaha District and the Kelaniya seat who love me, will be saddened by this gross injustice. I expressed my objection to the SLFP led United People’s Freedom Alliance seeking advice from Basil Rajapaksa who has serious charges against him. I am very happy with Sirisena’s statement made on 14, July.
He has acted as an experienced politician and with foresight. I salute the people of Hambantota, Kelaniya and Gampaha. Whoever orchestrated this injustice might escape me, but they will not escape god,” Silva explained.
