Mahinda Rajapaksa was able to win the 2005 Presidential election because he entered into a secret agreement with LTTE terrorists.
One of the clauses of this agreement was to coerce the Tamils in the North and East to boycott the Presidential election, said Urban Development, Water Supply and Drainage Minister Rauf Hakeem.
He said this addressing a meeting held at the Hantana Bhikkhu Training Institute in Kandy on July 16. Hakeem said Pulidevan and the so-called LTTE Police Chief Nadesan represented the LTTE during talks held in this connection with the Rajapaksa camp.
He said the 2002 – 2004 UNP government held six rounds of talks with the LTTE, but, the government left the negotiating table when the LTTE demanded an interim self rule unit for the North and East. He said then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe totally rejected this demand made by the LTTE.
The Rajapaksa camp paid a large sum of money to the LTTE terrorists in return for the boycott of elections in the North and East and this transaction was well known to former Parliamentarian Tiran Alles too, as he was a member of the negotiating team with the LTTE.
He said the UNP lost the 2005 Presidential election because it failed to educate the masses about the Rajapaksa – LTTE secret agreement properly.
He said Mahinda Rajapaksa won the 2010 Presidential election solely on the strength of the war victory against the LTTE.
