Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa owes the Independent Television Network (ITN) nearly Rs.102 million for the advertisements aired during the 2015 Presidential elections, says ITN General Manager Aruna Wijesinghe. He said that investigations had revealed that the former President was yet to pay the money to the State broadcaster.
Once the investigations are completed, legal action will be initiated in order to recover the money, he added. Wijesinghe said that the investigation into the failure of the former President to pay for the advertisements during the campaigning for the Presidential election is being conducted on three levels.
This includes a Media Ministry level investigation and an international investigation by a committee appointed at ITN. Apart from the television advertisements, the former President had been given additional airtime through political programs and songs.
Wijesinghe said that when he had inquired from the marketing division as to why Rajapaksa was given special treatment during the Presidential election, they said that they were only following orders.
