Abuse of Russian Diplomat Mangala orders tough Police action

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera Tuesday (8) ordered tough police action against a man identified as Manjula Wijekoon who has been discovered as being responsible for abusing a Russian diplomat and his family at the Arpico Super Centre car park at Hyde Park Corner in Colombo on 4 September.
Police have traced a video posted on Facebook that shows a man, driving a BMW vehicle, blocking the diplomat’s car at the car park of the Arpico Supermarket at Hyde Park Corner in Colombo, and verbally abusing him.
The video then shows the offender parking his vehicle at an unauthorized location, getting out of it and shoving the diplomat and his wife and two children after verbally abusing him in obscene language in broken English. The video also shows security guards withdrawing from the fracas after hearing the suspect verbally abusing the diplomat. According to police the individual in the video who appeared to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time, is expected to be arrested immediately.
mahinda rajapaksa and chinaThe diplomat, according to the Foreign Ministry, is the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Russian Embassy. A complaint has been lodged with the Inspector General of Police as well as the Colombo Range Police DIG about the need for diplomatic security.
Slave Island Police have traced the vehicle number plate WP KW-1985 and identified Manjula Wijekoon as the owner. Wijekoon, a businessman by profession, has been summoned by police to make a statement about the incident and to prove his ownership of the vehicle.
Wijekoon is learnt to be well known to several prominent politicians.
The case has been referred to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) which is currently conducting further investigations into the matter. However, the Officer-in-Charge of the CCD, Neville de Silva told Ceylon Today that the offender had been identified on 11 September as the man who abused the Russian diplomat the previous week.
