The SLFP’s in-fighting reached a new height last week with the party’s top rung leaders lashing out at each other in public over what happened under the previous administration. A heated verbal battle in Parliament between Transport Minister and former Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva and UPFA Kalutara District MP Kumara Welgama was nothing but a demonstration of the hostile dynamics prevailing within the SLFP, now led by President Maithripala Sirisena.

It all began when Transport Minister de Silva criticized the conduct of his predecessor while talking about the EPF funds of the SLTB in Parliament on Wednesday. The Transport Minister charged that the SLFP had not paid EPF funds due to its employees when Welgama was the Transport Minister. When the Transport Minister made this statement, his predecessor, Welgama, was seen glaring at him from the opposition benches of the House.

I Said Everything About Rajapaksha – Yasara

Former Chief Executive of the CSN Yasara Abeynayake has reportedly told the Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) everything about her relationship with Yoshitha Rajapaksa, one of the sons of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Abeynayake had been questioned since July, and the last time she was questioned, she had revealed that Yoshitha Rajapaksa visited the CSN office often and had dealings with her.

The FCID had visited the CSN last month to conduct investigations, and a small office of CSN was also found to be operating at the Presidential Secretariat.

MR’s Driver To Be Arrested For Thajudeen Murder

A driver of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to be arrested in connection with the murder of former Sri Lanka Rugby captain Wasim Thajudeen.

The CCTV footage on the abduction of Wasim Thajudeen that shows the events taken place just before his murder was handed over to Colombo University to be analysed. The CID had last week informed Court that Colombo University was studying the footage and that several vehicles could be identified from the CCTV images.

The Court had ordered the CID to obtain foreign assistance if required to analyse the video and report back to Court soon.

The Court had also ordered the CID to obtain statements from former DIG Anura Senanayake and former Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) Ananda Samarasekera on giving false information in relation to the incident.

According to CID sources, a military officer who was the driver of the former President is to be arrested this week in connection with the investigations into the murder while several others are also to be arrested for questioning.

The sources said the driver of the former President has been removed from the Presidential detail and transferred to a military camp in Trincomalee.

A tense situation arose in Parliament last Friday when Thajudeen’s murder was discussed with the opposition, disrupting proceedings.

Thajudeen was found dead in his car on May 17, 2012 in Kirulapone. According to police reports at the time, the rugby player was driving home after attending a party when he lost control of the car and crashed into a wall by Park Road. The car had exploded instantly and burnt the victim.

However, suspicions arose later, and it was reported that Thajudeen was murdered.
