Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told the Parliament yesterday that persons who were involved in corruption and financial fraud will have no salvation from the wrongs they have committed.
He said that the “Yaha Palana” government will never let these corruptionists and hypocrites to escape from crimes they committed to the nation. He was responding to a question raised by Chief Opposition Whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake, under Standing Order 23 (2).
The Premier also stressed that the government will never let anybody make allegations against the government claiming that it is taking revenge of hunting.
He further said that according to the Article 12 (1) of the Constitution, all persons are equal before the law and are entitled to the equal protection of the law. So the government will not interfere with legal proceedings and the Police and the Attorney General’s Department has the freedom to take the final decision of all investigations. “According to the Dhammapada, a person who has committed an act of sin has no deliverance from the sin and its consequences,” he said.
He said that various information and complains on the financial malpractices, and corruptions of the previous regime have been received to the Anti Corruption Secretariat. Some government ministers have already revealed some of these corruptions and frauds.
The secretariat has already handed over these complaints to the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABC) and Police Legal Division. According to that around 226 complaints have received to the FCID and 34 complaints received to the CID.
He further said that the investigations on 35 complaints have already completed and the final reports have been submitted to the Attorney General’s Department.
“Corruption and fraud were rampant during that period and those corruptionists and fraudsters were protected during the past few years, there was no proper mechanism to curb massive corruptions and frauds and to take legal action against corruptionists and fraudsters,” he said.
So we all know that this wrong procedure cannot be revised suddenly. Even the institutions that are responsible to take action against frauds and corruptions had also been corrupted during that time. So the government had to train officials and to establish new institutions in order to create a country free of corruptions.
