Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena on Monday said he is considering devolving powers to provinces through a new constitution which is now under discussion, President Sirisena said he supports devolving powers to provinces within a united Sri Lanka. He noted that several issues faced by the people can be addressed by strengthening provincial councils.
The president said the government is keen to give more powers to the provinces through the new constitution and said it is important that the government and the provincial councils reach an understanding on the issues at hand.
The president said that in the modern age, experts always speak of how best powers must be devolved and not just be focused in one area. He said that if anyone opposes devolving powers, that is a sign of how those people have not moved ahead with the changing times.
There is opposition by the former President Mahinda Rajapaksha and his supporters who are mostly known for their racist policies, they oppose devolving powers in Sri Lanka, particularly to the minority dominated north of the country where Tamil Tigers once fought for a separate Tamil state.
The former president Mahinda tried to use the racist card to continue to stay in power, He and his supporters firmly believed that the majority Sinhala community will support them in last year election. But miserably failed tio win the election by a small margin.
Rajapaksha and his racist supporters are playing the Racist card again so that the new constitution will not give more powers to the provinces within a united Sri Lanka. His supporters believe that if the provinces are given more power their racist policies will not get any support among the public.
When Mahinda was in power he promised the western leaders that he will implement more powers to provinces calling 13+ once he is allowed to kill the LTTE members and the world leaders turned away when more than 40,000 Tamil civilians and LTTE Leaders who surrendered with white flags were killed. But once his Army killed the Tamils in May 2009 Mahinda turned to China and anti western countries and refused to implement even the current constitution of the country.
Rajapaksha family members and siblings in Sri lanka have become millionaires within years of end of the war in May 2009 and wants to continue the royal family status they enjoyed by abusing the government resources under Mahinda’s rule..
