BY KAMAL SURAWEERA – KANDY

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said, the auspicious times for the…… Sinhala and Hindu New Year had been prepared not according to how the general public wanted them but according to the requirements of the administrator’s of the country.

Therefore, the former President said that he would not participate in the Anointing of Oil Ceremony which had to be done facing the West which was held at an Auspicious Time day before yesterday. Mahinda Rajapaksa stated this on the 16th morning at the Asgiri Maha Vihara in Kandy.

He had visited Kandy to worship the Sacred Tooth Relic and was welcomed by the Diyawadana Nilame Pradeepa Dela Bandara.
Former President visited the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter and addressed the media subsequently.

Rajapaksa said that the Auspicious Times for the New Year had been prepared according to the convenience of the administrators of the country rather than the convenience of the people and although they were not experts in astrology, there is no custom that auspicious events are carried out while facing the West.

He said further that, having Auspicious Times during the evening is unsuitable and that various groups had told him not to use those times.
