Former Parliamentarian and ex-Mahinda Rajapaksa loyalist Sajin Vass Gunawardena yesterday said that a Rajapaksa family member had orchestrated the recent mud slinging campaign against him carried out by politicians Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila and Sri Ranga.
Gunawardena addressing the media at his Borella residence said, “The allegations against me are baseless and there is an organised campaign against me for political gain by a handful of politicians who are in the UPFA and they have not made any specific reference to these allegations.”
The former MP said: “There were four prominent members of the UPFA responsible for depriving me of my nominations during the last general election and they keep vilifying me.”
The one time Rajapaksa confidant charged that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was controlled by Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila. “I challenge them to contest from a different symbol leaving the betel leaf and they will lose at the next general election.
Criminal Defamation Laws should be re-introduced in the country as defaming people had become a pastime for certain politicians, he said.
“I have challenged Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila to a public debate on a private television channel. I am confident that Gammanpila will accept the challenge.”
He would not leave politics and was confident that he would get nomination at the next general election as the people of Balapitiya were with him, the ex-MP said, adding that the proof of his popularity had become evident at the SLFP May Day rally in Galle.
Assault On Dr.Chris Nonis Denied
Former Parliamentarian and monitoring minister of the Foreign Ministry during the UPFA government Sajin Vass Gunawardena still claims that he didn’t assault Sri Lanka’s former High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Chris Nonis in 2013 in New York.
Addressing the media at his Borella residence, Gunawardena said, “I had a heated argument with the High Commissioner that night at the residence of the then SriLankan Airlines Country Manager to North America, Dilan Ariyawansa and the next morning I phoned him and apologised, but I didn’t assault him.”
The incident had been blown out of proportion and Dr. Nonis to date had not said that there was an assault, he said.
“The argument ensued after I spoke on behalf of a female diplomat,” he said.
The story had been fabricated by some interested parties who were hell bent on ruining his political career, Gunawardena said.
