No-Faith motion against Mangala

Joint Opposition member and United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP Udaya Gammanpila said that a No-confidence motion against the Foreign Minister will be imminent if the President does not take necessary steps.

Reports indicate that the Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera is still of the view that foreign Judges must be employed for war crimes tribunal, despite the President’s statement last week assuring the public that only local Judges would be employed for this purpose.
“The President should remove him or he should resign. If none of those takes place we must bring a No-confidence motion against him which I will discuss with the party leaders of the Joint Opposition, at the next Party Leaders’ meeting,” Gammanpila told Ceylon Today.

Fellow member of the Joint Opposition from Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and UPFA MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena conceded that the foreign judges being appointed to the war crimes tribunal was a valid concern. Commenting on Samaraweera’s alleged contradictory statement, Abeywardena told Ceylon Today; “The President himself vouched to say that nothing would happen in that regard. I really don’t know what the foreign minister is up to. We don’t know whether he is in this government or another government or whether he is working for someone else. Perhaps he is functioning under someone else’s instructions. We are not sure about this. If he really functions as a member of this government then he should resign. A No-confidence motion will happen very soon.
There has been a bill tabled in the House to put up a Secretariat to look into disappearances only in the North and the East. But there have been disappearances in the other parts of the country as well. But that part has not been mentioned. For that purpose they will have to have Secretariat and this Secretariat can employ anybody from any part of the world.
They can get advice and opinions. In that they can get even judges into it. We have to consider this very seriously. They are doing all of these to find fault with our war heroes.”
