Parliament questions alleged statement by Wigneswaran

Parliament today raised questions over a statement allegedly made by Northern Province Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran.

Opposition Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena a known sinhala hardliner who had supported the killing of thousands of Tamil civilians said that Northern Province Chief Minister Wigneswaran had made a statement which is a threat to the unity in the country.

Northern Province Chief Minister Wigneswaran was reported to have said that Sinhalese communities must not be settled in Tamil dominated areas in the North, nor should Buddhist Temples be created.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will make a statement on the controversy which arose over the alleged statement made by Northern Province Chief Minister Wigneswaran at a protest rally in Jaffna recently.

However Kiriella said Northern Province Chief Minister Wigneswaran had denied making the comments attributed to him in the media.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader and opposition leader R. Sampanthan also noted that Northern Province Chief Minister Wigneswaran had denied making the comments.
