imfForeign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama yesterday confirmed that Sri Lanka will receive the US$ 1.9 billion World Bank loan and the government is now negotiating with the institution. Bogollagama was addressing the media soon after his return from the Non Alignment Movement Summit in Egypt.

“It’s a huge loan and as a result there is a certain process that has to be adopted before the World Bank releases the money,” he said. The Foreign Minister also confirmed that the 500 US$ million loan pledged by Lybia is also forthcoming and now the negotiations are taking place.

Responding to a question whether there was any division in agreeing to the WB loan granted to the country at the NAM Summit he said he answered in the negative. One of the key factors was that we were in a position to articulate that Sri Lanka was free of terrorism he said.

The discussions at the NAM Summit mainly focused on contemporary challenges faced by the member states and President Mahinda Rajapaksa reiterated his stance that terrorism should be defeated and the need to counter terrorism with resolve the Foreign Minister said.

“Sri Lanka’s President was hailed by all Head’s of State as being the only head of state who had defeated terrorism,” he said.

Bogollagama quoted President Rajapaksa as saying that by imposing sanctions on countries it is the masses or the community who will be affected and not the leaders and hence such sanctions should not be imposed.
