Contradicting the pro-Rajapaksa camp’s accusations that the Bodu Bala Sena was created by the then main opposition, the UNP and funded by Norway in order to destabilise the Rajapaksa regime, former Ambassador the Geneva Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka said that it was Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Israeli government which was responsible for it.
Speaking at an event held in July 2014 to show solidarity with the Gaza, Jayatilleka said that the Defence Ministry led by the “Pro Israeli younger brother” of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa has encircled the “Pro Palestinian” ideology of the then President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Making a startling revelation during the speech, Jayatilleka told the audience of how Gotabaya Rajapaksa attempted to intimidate him.
“There is something I want to reveal. A highly placed defence official has sent a SMS to me and asked me who I was to be criticising Israel. I said I was the Ambassador appointed by his brother” he said.
Detailing the manner in which Israel had interfered with the country through its influence on Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Jayatilleka said Sri Lanka had used the Israeli prototype for post war rebuilding, resulting in the resurrection of the call for an Eelam.
“I have written proof of this, and my friends also have written proof of this in case something happens to me” he said alluding to physical danger of his revelations.
“During the period of 2008-2009 there were many delegations which visited Israel by top Defence Officials. Minister Champika Ranawaka was also once there but that is no surprise. They were offered advice for Post-Conflict Homeland Security by the Israeli government. These Defence Officials accepted that proposal. That is the prototype they used in Sri Lanka giving rise to the resurgence of the call of Eelamists……..” he said.
Speaking of the Anti-Muslim phenomenon, in conjunction with the rest of his revelations, Jayatilleka said that it was Gotabaya Rajapaksa who provided cover for the Bodu Bala Sena.
“Recently a man called Agnana Nissara අඥාණ නිස්සාර පුද්ගලයෙක් (Gnanasara), said ‘if Rauff Hakeem tries to make Maligawatta a Gaza, we are ready to be a Israel’. I have no intention of defending Rauff Hakeem’s politics….. anyway … these things are not not just accidents, prior to that (Gnanasara’s statement) ‘the High Official’ went for an opening, it is not the picture taken that is important, but the speech he made there. He said that no one should be afraid (of the BBS), and that we should support its work and that what they do is important work.” Jayatilleka said.
At the time, Jayatillaka was a vociferous critique of the Bodu Bala Sena and other extremist organisations. Representatives of the Bodu Bala Sena had once attended a peace building conference in Norway resulting in the current insinuation that it was a creation of the country. However, no clear proof of such connection has been established, instead many view the insinuation as a diversion to the revelations made by Jayatilleka in July 2014.
