Several Government MPs charged towards opposition benches across the Well of Parliament, angered by a remark by Joint Opposition Leader Dinesh Gunawardena a close associate of Former President Mahinda Rajapaksha.
Joint opposition MP’s who are accused of large scale frauds and murders during the rule of Mahinda are using the racist card for their survival and PM Ranil is accused of helping them to cover up their acts by using his powers as the PM. President Maithiri and PM Ranil came to power by promising to expose the fraudulent acts and murders of journalists and Human Rights activists by the Mahinda regime.
However, their advance was prevented by UNP veteran Gamini Jayawickrema Perera and Minister Wijith Wijayamuni Soyza, who rushed to the scene and pushed back the MPs to their seats.
MP Gunawardena a know racist lashed out at the Leader of the Opposition a Tamil MP R. Sampanthan, after the latter commended MP Ravi Karunanayake for relinquishing his portfolio. “That was a shameless speech!” MP Gunawardena shouted at the Leader of the Opposition as the latter was taking his seat after making a statement.
A government MP said ”It is interesting to see Mahinda and his associated MP’s who are accused of making millions of fraudulent money and killing Journalists who exposed their acts during the Mahinda government are accusing the Tamil Leader Sambanthan who wants to keep this country united. But Mahinda and his associated MP’s were using Racists moves on Tamils as a way of their survival to gain the Sinhala votes and cover up their fraudulent acts and murders”.
MP Sampanthan a well respected educated lawyer praised Karunanayake for resigning, adding that ”it was the fundamental right of a person accused of a crime to be presumed innocent till proven guilty”. But MP Gunawardena who do not understand the basic law of the country charged that “You were talking as a Tamil MP and not as the Opposition Leader,”. Mahinda’s close friend Gunawardena wanted the opposition leader to accuse the government MP ravi of frauds so that he can cover up the frauds done by Rajapaksha family members during their rule.
Soon after Gunawardena’s critical remarks, Government MPs were on their feet in protest, shouting down Gunawardena. UNP MP Nalin Bandara Jayamaha, raising a Point of Order charged that MP Gunawardena had threatened the Opposition Leader’s life.
PM Ranil Wickremesinghe said in Parliament that Minister Ravi Karunanayake had set a good precedent by resigning from his portfolio. He said no member of the previous Mahinda govt had resigned no matter how serious the charges levelled against them were. Gunawardena and other Mahinda associates was seated silently and kept their heads down when PM Ranils made the remarks.
