Former Minister Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has decided to extend his support to the one who promises to take full responsibility for national security, reports said.
Fonseka has had a lengthy discussion with United National Party (UNP) presidential candidate Minister Sajith Premadasa and also with Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, candidate of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
We reported events regarding the scenario at an early phase.
Following reporting claiming that there was a secret meeting between Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Sarath Fonseka, Sajith Premadasa has continuously urged Fonseka to support him. Premadasa has promised to take responsibility for the national security, as Fonseka hopes, sources said.
However, the former minister has stressed Premadasa that such agreement shall not be made internally, but be publically declared, sources further said. Accordingly, Sajith Premadasa has told Sarath Fonseka that he would announce it at the UNP’s inaugural public rally at the Galle Face Green today (10).
According to Sarath Fonseka, he will support Sajith Premadasa only if he is fully responsible for the national security of the country. If otherwise, he would make a decision in the next rally, he has said.
The same sentiment has been expressed before Gotabaya Rajapaksa as well, according to sources.
In reponsem Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said that he would make that statement after Sarath Fonseka steps in to his stage.
However, Fonseka has not agreed to the term, further claimed by sources.
Accordingly, Sarath Fonseka has told Gotabaya Rajapaksa that his request should be first and foremost agreed in the public stage.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa accordingly has to acknowledge on the public stage that Sarath Fonseka will be given the responsibility of national security once he assumes office in order to secure Fonseka’s support, according to internal sources.
Although Sarath Fonseka does not forget what the Rajapaksas did to him, he has decided to support them acting on his own request as national security is the most important issue at the moment claimed by sources.
