The Government is to conduct a special survey on religious and historical sites located in the Northern and Eastern Province.
The move comes with allegations being raised that illegal and unauthorised constructions of religious sites have been taking place in the North and East. The survey is to be carried out by the end of January, officials told The Sunday Morning.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Cultural, and Religious Affairs Wijitha Nanda Kumar said that while this is not a new project, the Ministry along with the Department of Archaeology had instructed the respective divisional secretariats to carry out the survey.
“The Ministry co-ordinated with the Survey Department and requested their assistance in this regard. We had issued survey orders to some of the sites about five months ago but due to the election that was stalled. We will recommence this project in the coming weeks.”
Kumar further reiterated that the Survey Department was keen to assist the Ministry in completing this task.
Meanwhile, the Ministry had also instructed the divisional secretariats to send the preliminary details of these sites to the Survey Department, in order to efficiently carry out the survey.
