President Mahinda Rajapaksa had gone to Jaffna and distributed others peoples gold, but no matter what he did the northern Tamils would not vote for him, the UNP said yesterday.

Assistant Secretary of the UNP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam addressing a news conference in Colombo said that the Tamils were not fools and they were fully aware of how the UPFA government had violated their democratic rights, after having claimed that all communities would be treated alike with the end of the war.

The Jaffna population would take what Rajapaksa distributed since they knew it was not out of his pocket. But they would cast their vote in favour of the UNP, since it had proved to be a national party that represented all communities and religions and could not be swayed by extremist forces, he noted adding that even the true Sinhala Buddhists would support the UNP since they had seen enough of the burgeoning number of corrupt ruling party politicians, violence and crime that had engulfed the country in the post war era when there should have been an end to such practices which the LTTE was accused of perpetrating.

The MP observed that the government which spoke about good governance had not allowed the Northern Provincial Council to function according to the wishes of the people and had resorted to devious methods to scuttle the principle of devolution.

The Tamils, he emphasized could no longer be fooled by rhetoric and lies in the form of election pledges as they knew that their province was run by those they had not elected to office.
