  Foreigners visiting the Northern part of the country should inform the Defence Ministry of such visits as there had been negative intervention on the part of a few foreign nationals visiting the region, announced by Military Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya.

Brigadier Wanigasooriya said that the Ministry recognizes and always remembers the enormous services rendered by friendly countries, and National and International Non Governmental Organizations for the positive development of the region during the period of war and after the defeat of the LTTE. However, he briefed that they had received information that a few foreigners visiting the region are involved in propagating views which would lead to creating rifts among the communities.

He said that it is a simple process and foreigners visiting the northern region are requested to state the purposes and the locations of their visits in the North via a written letter addressed to the Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development. The request can be done by the individuals or the organizations in the country which facilitate them. He stressed that this directive should not be misconstrued as a bar to foreigners visiting the region as more than 99 per cent of foreigners visiting the region have bona fide intentions of helping the development of the region.

He also stressed that this is not however should be taken as a bar on foreigners.

“A very few of them are involved in activities which would pose a threat to national security. This move will help us prevent such bad motives or negative interventions which affect the national security”, he added. Accordingly, foreigners who wish to travel to the Northern Province can write to the Secretary, the Defence and Urban Development Ministry, 15/1 Baladaksha Mawatha Colombo 3 or fax their requests to 0112328109.
