Leader of the Democratic National Front (DNF) Dr. N. Kumaraguruparan yesterday said Sri Lanka being a member country of the United Nations could not justify the arrest and detention of a father who had lost a son in shelling during the war.

The former Parliamentarian, member All Party Representative Committee (APRC) and former Western Provincial Councillor (WPC) told The Island that the TNA had always called for action to ensure the safety of the witnesses ready to testify before the UN appointed committee probing war crimes. The President must order the immediate release of this distressed father who had lost his son during the war, Dr. Kumaraguruparan said.

The arrest and detention of Sinnathamby Krishnarajah of Pooneryn, Kiraanji, Kilinochchi amounted to a breach of his fundamental human rights and amounted to an affront to the United Nations, the Democratic National Front Leader told the media yesterday.

Krishnarajah had been arrested with a set of UN war crimes complaint forms to be sent to the Commission of Inquiry appointed by the UN, Dr. Kumaraguruparan said. ” “How can keeping a set of UN documents amount to an act of terrorism? After all, Sri Lanka is also a member country of the United Nations.”
